Oh, Marion Barry, civil rights is one of those things politicians should lead on...should do the right thing, even against the wishes of their constituents if a majority is oppressing a minority.
@MisterHippity: One night a long time ago, I was wandering around campus, when I spotted an owl in a tree and a girl laying down looking up at it.
Maybe because they were scheduled to perform a concert the next evening, I convinced myself that it was Stevie Nicks, so I laid down in the grass nearby hoping to make a dream come true.
Neither of us said a word and eventually after maybe half an hour, she got up and floated away. To this day, I swear that it could've very easily been Ms. Nicks, but since I was tripping on acid at the time, I'll never know.
No way to gracefully drop Biden from the ticket (the VP selection being a president's first and most important decision).
Except maybe through a job swap with Hillary. Hmmmm. I could see that.
(Though I don't believe that anything being said about Obama 2012's ticket in Nov. 2009.)
@naugahydeinplainsight: Um, all kidding aside Joe Biden for Secretary of State sounds like the worst idea ever. Can you imagine the wars we'd be in by 2016?
@ms_priestypants: He is a little unpredictable, isn't he. Yet wasn't his name high on the list of SecState candidates being bandied about last year? Even as VP he was hailed for his foreign policy experience.
@naugahydeinplainsight: Mrs. Biden let it slip that Obama offered Joe his choice of SoS or VP, with whichever one he didn't pick going to Hillary. So a 2012 (or sooner?) switcheroo is entirely conceivable, seeing as Barry considers them both qualified for either job.
@naugahydeinplainsight: I should note that I get my political news exclusively from SNL skits and The Daily Show, in order to counteract my father getting his from Fox News.
@ms_priestypants: Having filled both their prospective roles, Clinton has, thus far, made more gaffes than Biden.
And Biden, believe it or not, has been rumored to be the most dovish member of the new administration. I would welcome the switch (that is not going to happen).
Don't drink at Tom and Jerry's. I recently moved away from NY to work a year in the south doing social justice work (relevant, not bragging). On my last night in town, my friends and I went out in the LES and ended up at Tom and Jerry's around midnight-- this certainly was not to be the final destination, but many of my friends were several drinks in at this point.
There were about 10 of us sitting at the front table on the right, where you walk in. Everyone was drinking and having a good time. One of my friends went up to get a drink, and I asked him to get me another round. I noticed he was gone for a long time-- about 30 minutes. Finally, he sat down empty handed-- I was said "dude?" He said that the bartender (mid 30s woman who has worked there a while) refused to serve him because the last time he got a drink, he did not tip her. My friend is a very sweet guy; he sincerely forgot and sincerely apologized (more to the point, what if he was just waiting to tip her at the end of the night, like some folks choose to do). Still, the bartender refused.
I went up to the bar to order for me and him, and she says "Oh, friend of the non-tipper." I said, "come on, he apologized." She then flips out and starts screaming at me: "You have no idea what's going on in the world! Why don't you and your friends go twitter about it!"
I was flabbergasted because: 1) the 10 people were all in their late 20s, early 30s, mildly dressed 9/10 left tips for their drinks, 2) None of us were using a handheld phone or anything-- I have never used twitter, and 3) she went from 0-100 in 2 seconds- yelling and waiving her arms.
Anyway, I argued back that I don't use twitter and that I do understand that he should have tipped and that I used to work in restaurants for 5 years. She argued "Well I've been doing it for 15"-- to which I responded, then you should handle not getting tipped occasionally without freaking out.
Anyway, by that point my other friends gathered around, and we all told her we were leaving. Everyone was so upset after the argument we all went home, and that is how I spent my last night in NY for a year.
@ima221: sorry, I meant to add that most of the 10 people were public interest lawyers working for peanuts instead of taking firm jobs-- that is why the "you have no idea what is going in the world" was even more disturbing.
@ima221: was hillary there? ... and why are you telling us all this. you let something like this upset you instead of just moving on or complaining to the manager? need thicker skin than that if you're gonna be a public interest lawyer..... i mean, really.
You might want to ... you know, talk to someone about it. A professional. That can help you get past an experience like this and move on with your life ...
@BooWahBabe: I wrote this because the bar was mentioned in the above post. I am totally over it, but I don't think I'd drink there again considering how rude the bartender was to me. After seeing Tom and Jerry's mentioned in the post, I figured why not share the story. I guess my retelling made me seem like a baby, which i guess is a fair criticism.
@ima221: Wow, totally missed the Tom and Jerry's reference in the post above. I just figured you had lost your bearings on the way to posting a yelp review.
@Han Valen: People buy this sort of thing mainly because it wouldn't be a half-bad idea. I like Joe Biden, and I think he'd be a pretty good President, but he'll be John McCain old in '16, which is the next time another Democrat will get a turn.
Hillary Clinton has the demonstrated support of approximately half the Democratic Party right off the bat. Four years as Veep on top of her time as Secretary of State would give her the sort of resume boost that would make her extremely hard to beat.
@HurtsSoGood: It might be a good move politically, but I think Hillary's considerable talents (not to mention political weight) would be wasted in the VP position. She just makes such a great S of S that I would hate to see her fade into relative obscurity like the VP often does.

Actually / if necessary: this will most likely / definitely happen.
P.s. Kerry to Sec St.
Seriously -- why would Obama NOT do this.
Term 1 neutered Bill. Term 2 will most likely require some frisson.
Then HRC gets to be president. If she can beat John Thune.
