Can we please start the public referendums on giving tax breaks to right wing religious organizations? Hell, it's America, where we put people's rights up for a majority vote! Right? #gaymarriage
@manchops: The great (or terrible, in my view terrible) thing about America is you can put almost anything up for a referendum. Just get a bunch of people with nothing to do to go get a bunch of people with slightly less to do to sign a petition urging them to ban bananas from bodegas. Or whatever your pet issue is. If you need help, call people from California, no one does referendums like they do. #gaymarriage
@ModestProposal: Shit- do you think I should start paying attention when I sign all those petitions shoved in front of me on the way to the subway? I pretty much sign anything if those people will just let me get to work on time.... #gaymarriage
@manchops: I'd settle for forcing straight people to stay married to each other. In the 1970's and 1980's the republicans blamed working women and divorce for America's problems (and the "welfare queens"). The reason you don't hear from Anita Bryant anymore is because after she divorced her abusive husband (and she had such a beatific smile!!!), her "friends" in the right wingnut sphere dumped her ass. I've noticed the wingnuts don't seem to care too much about divorce anymore, since all of their leaders usually have several divorces under their belts. Let's force them to stay married AND force them to personally support teenage mothers and their unwanted babies. I'd give up the right to marry just to watch Rush Limbaugh suffer for eternity being married to some woman who hated his guts, and having to support multiple teenage mothers, preferably minority teenagers. #gaymarriage
@erinna: The only petition I've ever signed was back in college and it was to get 2-ply toilet paper in the dorm bathrooms. That was a position I could get behind. #gaymarriage
As a resident of Washington State, I voted to approve the "everything-but-marriage" act, reasoning that "do unto others as you would have them do unto you" trumps the "Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination" philosophy.
And then I put on Cruel Intentions and watched Sarah Michelle Gellar kiss Selma Blair one more time. #gaymarriage
It would be interesting to see what kind of long-standing psychological effects there can be from basically being insulted every day/being made to feel like there is something wrong with you. I'm sure people go through it in some way, on some scale, in their own lives, but having people vote on if they think you should be allowed to do the stuff they can do?
The new Jersey Gov has dropped the "marriage is between a man and a woman" line; the separate but equal laws; Obama struggling with what Jeezus says and what his brain is telling him...I'm pretty sure we are all internalizing this stuff, and I imagine it is bad for us (even if it's just that we'll die with unacknowledged insecurities). Chin up and all, but seriously, it would be nice if it stopped. #gaymarriage
"It will happen in our lifetime" depends upon how old you are now. If you're 30 and you live until 75, yes. If you're older than that you've already seen/ encountered enough prejudice of all kinds to last you two lifetimes.
Just this week I've had some passing interactions with right-wingers here in what's supposedly an increasingly progressive county. They are very angry and scared. And as always, the usual suspects are to blame in their minds. Having grown up around some people like that, it can be frustrating that so many years later there still seem to be so many.
(btw Michigan voted against even the chance of domestic partnerships several years ago while even in a rainbow-friendly local town a human rights ordinance was also dismissed.)
But yes, gradually, way too gradually, the pendulum swings on all issues of bigotry. #gaymarriage
NOM's weirdest justification was that the law would allow for gay marriage "to be taught in schools." Like, remember all those heterosexual marriage classes? Usually right after spelling. #gaymarriage
@maroidrage: Yeah, I remember right after discussing hygiene in health class, we had an in-depth, round-robin discussion on butt sex and the finer points of anal stimualtion.
I didn't know gays existed back then, much less, what they were and who they diddeled.
The priests at my local Catholic church never hesitated to enlighten us about gay stuff..."Here, my son, let me assist you with that." #gaymarriage
This really, really sucks. Conservatives should realize that more marriage = more stability = better society (= economic strength, if you insist on that being the measure). And liberals should realize that second-tier domestic partnership is an insult. Besides, gays should have the right and privilege to deal with nasty divorces, just like us heteros. #gaymarriage
@Z und Vielpunkt's chick: Oh god. What exactly offends you? That a substantial number of gay people have a sort of unique enthusiasm for life that I find ingratiating? That I think this enthusiasm is often evidence of an uncorrupted good nature that belies the right's unfair characterization of gays as immoral? I'm not making fun of these guys. I think the video is funny because their positive energy is infectious. Save your offense for actual prejudice. #gaymarriage
@MiracleDrug: Look, I may indeed be the only one who was offended by this, but let me explain why I thought it was offensive. I'm thrilled that you appreciate the "unique enthusiasm for life" that "a substantial number of gay people have," but the day I wake up to learn that a state has voted to take away the rights of gay and lesbian families is NOT the day that I care to be reminded of the stereotypical caricatures of us that dance in so many straight people's heads. I'm sorry that I don't have a snarky sense of humor about this. And I know you didn't mean to cause offense, but the post poured salt in the wounds. #gaymarriage
@krudd: Your analogy is specious. Movies like that were products of white writers, directors, producers, etc, taking advantage of the prejudices of a predominantly white audience. That's why such movies are seen as exploitative. In that aerobic video no one held an audition to make sure they were "gay" enough, and nobody scripted the three men except themselves. Nobody, in other words, was exploiting them. The fact that they conform to a gay stereotype, one that doesn't necessarily diminish them, was entirely their own decision. #gaymarriage
@unclevanya: Sadly, "legislate away the gay" is the new "pray away the gay."
A commenter on a recent Prop 8 article recently suggested "civil unions for everyone!" Sounds better and better. Those who also want to participate in a religious marriage ritual can, but this shouldn't be a requirement for equal rights. Until we de-couple religious marriage from rights and benefits accorded to couples joined under the law, we aren't getting anywhere. #gaymarriage
@KikiCanuck: It seems like that's what happened in Washington state. People were okay with domestic partnership with all the rights of marriage, but not called "marriage". It blows my mind that something so petty is a sticking point, but there you have it. #gaymarriage
@KikiCanuck: There are a number of churches that are perfectly willing to perform marriages; these churches are being told that they're not just separate, but unequal, and that some churches' religious restrictions should be enforced on everyone. This should bother people, but it doesn't, because OMG GAYZ WILL KILL OUR BAYBEES!!!!111!!!! #gaymarriage
Power before ideals for all men, even Barack Obama. Maybe the world will change; if it does, I'm sure He'll be right there to take credit for changes in the opinions of the average polled American voter. #gaymarriage
@Z und Vielpunkt's chick: @MissNormaDesmond: Actually, I’m really looking for a cute freaky bisexual girl who wants to play music and make babies with me. I suspect NOM will find a way to ruin that too. #gaymarriage
@iplaudius: NOM doesn't want women to play music, silly- it confuses the uterus. Women are for obeying and birthing and HETEROSEXUAL porking, only. #gaymarriage
I wonder if Barry will give another speech to make us all feel like he gives a rats ass about the us queers? I bet it will be a fine speech, lots of applause lines, many HRC people will smile and shake his hand and nod and cry.
And then he'll go home and do abso-fucking-lutely nothing. #gaymarriage
@moifauxmail: i am not asking this to be snooty but i do want to know... what could he do about this? I feel like any attempt he would make right now would be shot down in congress or the senate.
Stupid checks and balances... #gaymarriage
@KentuckyBabe: Sign an executive order stopping all discharges under DADT for one. Keep it in place until congress gets the law together. That would be gigantic. A body blow to these jesus-humpers.
The house and senate are OVERWHELMINGLY in democratic hands. What's he gonna do, wait til 2010 when discontent over the economy whittles down the majorities in both chambers? This is the moment to make bold moves. Elections have consequences. #gaymarriage
Let's not forget that Eric Holder pretended not to know the issue in Maine, and he's the Attorney General! It's about time that the Obama administration paid more than lip service to gay rights. #gaymarriage
