This whole thing has been a small part of a much larger anti-south-side-of-the-park movement, pitting NYU against well...NYU actually.

@T-Gawk: Hmm, I was about to say that's some expensive feng shui-ing. Isn't this "better" placement since all the chi/drug dealers from 5th ave can now enter the park and properly circulate? Or am I making that up?
