There is no chance this will be as good as the anime, but it could still be highly entertaining.
I'm still not sure how they're going to do those crazy hallucination scenes, though. Obviously with some kind of CG, but most of what makes those great in the original is Otomo's art style.
Wait, they probably won't even include the hallucination scenes.
And the audience won't get what's going on at all.
Duplicity? I'll tell you what went wrong. I hate Julia Roberts. I LOVE Clive Owen and I LOVE thrillers. But because of Julia "the mouth" Roberts, I won't go. And with any other actress, I would have already attended.
America does not like Julia Roberts as much as the press thinks we do.
@AspasiaReptile: I went to this movie and I enjoyed it, dammit! Helps that Roberts doesn't play a particularly likeable character, that's largely left to lovely Clive.
The opening credit sequence really set the tone for the whole film, too. And the soundtrack was good... Seriously, go see it, it's thinky and convoluted and I liked it. Slightly Thomas Crown Affair-ish.
I find it interesting that this morning everyone (except gawker) is reporting that Monsters V.S. Aliens is a box office smash!!!!! But just a few weeks ago Watchmen grossed 3 million dollars less in its first weekend and everyone was painting it as a moderate flop.
@JudgeFudge: Because nobody was rooting for Monsters vs. Aliens to fail. Note the "How embarrassing for Watchmen to get beaten by a kids movie!" jab, when I don't think anyone was expecting it to hold onto the "biggest opening weekend of the year" title for very long.
That being said, Monsters vs. Aliens was actually pretty cute.
@oboesqueaks: I haven't seen any figures, but my guess is that Monsters was close to $150, which was Watchmne's budget. All those CG animated family tent-pole seem to be budgeted around that these days....
I thought the problem about Duplicity was the marketing. It was confusing and didn't tell you anything about what the movie was about. I mean, are they supposed to be spies? Do they work for the CIA? Are they rivals or partners? Is there romantic tension? And it's helpful to know that they wear big sunglasses, but why do they wear big sunglasses?
I am only down with the Pals n' Gals adaptation if there is an interruption by an incredibly annoying Lil' Jinx segment every 20-25 minutes. That Lil' Jinx! She's incorrigible!
@Richard: Oh, if only. I'm surprised nobody has done anything decent with those comics, one way or another. There's a lot of potential for hilarity ensuing. And burger joint sponsorships!
@hortense: Are you too young to remember the live action TV versions of them in the 80's? Yes, they added a heaping dose of sex and it just seemed wrong.
I saw the movie this weekend and loved it. Yes, I read the book years ago but found it entirely too dense at the end when Dr. Manhattan and the chick were blah blah blah blah on Mars.
I think I'll have to read it again.
Why did it come out in March? I thought it would be more of a summer movie.
I can't believe they didn't learn instead that taking a legendary brand title, evacuating it of meaning and changing the ending would in turn alienate the fans. I mean, didn't they learn this with LeGuin's Earthsea TV show?
@Koreanish: Oof! I had almost forgotten about the Earthsea travesty. Not only did they screw with the plot, but they decided that all of the non-white characters should be white. WTF?
