You can't really blame him. It's a well known fact that everyone in the Dakotas has a limo with a driver whose taxes they don't pay. I mean, they don't call it the Badlands for nothing, right?

@Mediahohoho: It isn't that Daschle didn't pay the driver's taxes. The driver was paid for by another entity, and it was that entity's responsibility to pay the driver's taxes. What Daschle didn't pay was the tax on the benefit of having the car and driver. Some employment expenses are taxable and some are not. For example, if you relocate for work and work pays for the move, some of that cost is not taxable, whether the company pays the moving company or reimburses you. This was a taxable expense that should have been reported and Daschle didn't report it.

@Lymed: Thank you for clearing that up. It's still an enormous bill for a three-year benefit. Luckily, I won't be having that particular tax issue anytime soon.

The man has happily been a slut for the status-quo-totally-broken-health-care system and is the last person in Washington who should be anywhere near Health & Human Services -- "back taxes" does nicely as an official reason, but more likely someone finally got the stones to shriek "you're kidding, right!?" loud enough for Obama and Team to hear it.

As Leona Helmsly said, "Only the little people pay taxes." I am an Obama supporter , but I know I have to pay my taxes. These people have been on the George Bush gravy train too long. I'm sorry Tom, but your apology was too little, too late. Too bad, because you would've been a great one!!!!!!

@coachhop: His back taxes came from a failure to report income (i.e., imputed income from some one "lending" you a car and driver). I'm not sure what the Bush gravy train had to do with it...

I will never understand this for as long as I live - why do politicians (all kinds) insist on being irresponsible w/their taxes? I understand that the average American thinks he/she won't get caught, but elected/appointed officials? srsly? makes zero sense to me - if I were a politician, I would dot every i and cross every t to the point of being crazy anal.
