@Triborough: A friend of mine was in the Georgian Young Pioneers. She still looks back on it as the greatest time of her life: as some sort of idyll in the Caucasus mountains. In the evenings, they even studied the latest Marxist theory together with their political advisors. How wonderful!

By the way, to be a Boy Scout, it is a prerequisite to believe in some sort of deity. (It is their stated policy that they accept neither atheists nor even agnostics.) There is indoctrination there, too.
