I don't have time go through all the comments, but I hope someone's already pointed out that this girl used to be a fucking Christian singer. What do you expect? Ugh, she drives me nuts.

Wonderful post, Richard. "Dykesploitation" needs to enter the lexicon at once.

I fear, in the wake of last weeks vote, that the song made a clear and accurate statement on where our society is in relationship to the gay community.

It's a condescending, wrinkled-nosed "tolerance", indeed.

I believe everyone should have the right to marriage and to build a life with their person of choice regardless of biological or socially constructed definitions. I agree that Katy Perry's song is ridiculous and harmful because it plays on the fantasy of straight "girls" kissing for the pleasure of boys because it does not recognize a female sexuality outside of heterosexual norms. But, I have a problem with equating the issue of gay marriage, a civil rights issue, quickly, and without any qualifications, with the struggles faced by people of African descent in referring to Proposition 8, click on the link, as the new Jim Crow Laws. Jim Crow Laws belong to a specific period in our history and refer to specific crimes committed against a racially defined group of people as a means to maintain them, in the eyes of the law, in inhuman conditions. Proposition 8 is an attack on humanity, but let's give it's own space. While reading this piece I recoiled at reading the words "new and fabulous Jim Crow Laws" because it lessens the historical importance of the struggle that is still taking place by people of African descent in this country (if you have doubts compare the number of black and Hispanic men/women incarcerated to their white counterparts; or the number of black and Hispanic women/men who finish high school to their white counterparts or have health insurance, attend college, own homes...you get the drift). It's like comparing the Jewish Holocaust with the African Holocaust (yes, there was such a thing, it lasted centuries and spanned the globe). That's a no win situation. It leads us to ask: who suffered the most? Was it the same type of suffering? It's a bad path to take. Let's not equate these atrocities. Let's historicize these events. It's the only way to avoid turning on each othe and lose sight of what is important: equality for all.

I haven't heard the Jim Crow thing before, but there's been a lot of civil unions are "separate but equal" talk on some blogs I've been reading (some authored by people of color). Which I guess is literally true, but the historical parallel being drawn by the allusion is... um.... no.

Katy's uber religious mom and Pastor dad aren't fans of the song either. And it's kinda in direct conflict with her first album as Katy Hudson--a Christian album.

There's one part in the song that really irks me more than anything else:

No, I don't even know your name, it doesn't matter. You're my experimental game, just human nature.

I don't know about you, but human nature to me doesn't include using someone for your own experimental jollies.

And holy mcfuckballs, someone needs to take over this girl's styling.
