@GlasgowRose: Yes. And the boss on Parks and Rec. (the guy with the moustache) is married to "Karen" from "Will and Grace" (forget her name at the moment) if you didn't know already.
Well, Tina Fey was on the mainstage at Second City in Chicago before she was hired as a writer for SNL. Normally writers get hired because their performance experience is exceptional.
@kelsey.imean.dustin: 1) Good catch and 2) Nah, I don't think too many other people got it. Is "30 Rock" big in the Tagalog community or do they have one Tagalog write on their staff?
But I like your slight amazement that no one else understand tagalog slang.
@kelsey.imean.dustin: If that was intentional, it was a pretty outre joke, because according to a quick IM from my Tagalog-speaking cousin, 'egot' is not exactly a nice word for Af-Am men.
@kelsey.imean.dustin: Ay nako . . . I can't ever imagine the 30 Rock writers even realizing that "egot" is a seriously God-awful, politically incorrect word in Tagalog. Tagalog isn't exactly a romance language, you know? I'm old and a Miami Vice fan and I remember Philip Michael Thomas in an Entertainment Tonight interview in the '80s showing off that crass E.G.O.T. necklace charm and looking like a complete dickweed explaining its meaning. The bottom line is that 30 Rock was simply making fun of Philip Michael Thomas and not at all using the Filipino language for evil.
@sparklyharempants: That's 'coz you're either not an old like me, or you had more of a life in the 80's and Miami Vice and Entertainment Tonight dickweed interviews just didn't blip your radar . . . ;oD
Brian, you're off your rocker. Yes, Lorne made Fey the first female head writer of SNL. On NBC. NBC greenlit "30 Rock". Both Kevin Reilly and Ben Silverman kept the show around, despite very poor ratings. NBC has made a lot of poor decisions, both strategically and artistically, but the one person who has no right to complain is Tina Fey. The network has stuck by her when it would have acceptable to jettison her low-performing show. Even "Arrested Development" didn't get this level of coddling before FOX gave it the heave-ho.
The Dealbreakers opening credit jokes and the HD jokes that followed was the funniest stuff the show has done all season. It also used all of the characters perfectly for once, except no-show Cheyenne Jackson. And we got Bo and Hope from Days of our Lives too? Perfect.
This is still the absolute lamest hook from which to hang a "30 Rock" recap. What's next, the gleefully forced, obvious-yet-ill-reasoned-observation that "30 Rock" seems to be having fun at the expense of -- egad!!! -- the very same televisual medium by which it is presented? SHUT IT DOWN.
@terrible: I agree. It's too 'look at me' to be real - 'making fun of our conglomorate parent, how subversive.' If you were a conglomerate, this kind of over the top tweaking is what you would want to make yourself look more human.
Even though the "zero performance experience" might not have been true in Tina's case, she's still kind of not that great of an actress. Writer, sure! I'm sure most people disagree, but I don't find her engaging onscreen at all. Her eyes are completely blank and her lines, while mostly funny, always seem a little flat in their delivery. At least she seems to be sharing more screen time with the other actors as the show progresses. Personally, I'm waiting for The Alec Baldwin Show, Starring Tracy Morgan.
@She_of_the_Socks: The same was true of Jerry Seinfeld. He admitted to being a terrible actor, but he was the brilliance behind the show. (well, he and Larry David)
@PamBeesley: I was thinking the same thing. I think both Tina and Jerry aren't necessarily good actors (and are mostly playing themselves), but there's something about both performances that bring a lot to their shows.
This is the second "NBC Bashing" 30 Rock thread Brian has posted. And the second time where I'm just completely mystified. Are we watching the same show, Brian? Yeah, occasionally Tina takes a shot at NBC. But quite frankly, you're overreaching to interrupt these episodes as NBC bashing. In the last thread you posted, you didn't even get the Al Gore/recycling joke.
@unfriended: I couldn't agree more. This entire angle seemed completely contrived. I'm really not seeing it. Not trying to hate, just really dumbfounded as to where you are getting this. The entire show makes fun of network television...
