does anyone else remember the rather tragic--though rather excellent--story of how winona used to live with gwyneth paltrow and how the gwynmeister basically STOLE the role of Shakespeare in Love away from Winona (somehow, can't remember the sequence of events, but it sounded rather right as Winona was much higher box office at the time than paltrow)

anyway, very tragic as the gwyn is like the worst actress ever and completely forgettable in S.in L. (yet somehow manages to win the Oscar and make a spectacle of herself wailing and weeping and shrieking to the point where Blythe Danner, her EXCELLENT mother looks completely horrified in the audience.

    Anyway. Reality does bite. #winonaryder

@manchops: That story is a chestnut launched by Winona herself. She was never considered for the role, but was at the time--at least according to Gwyneth, "hell-bent on taking [her] down."

Gwyn blogged a veiled graf about it on Goop:

    [goop.com]

It's pretty well known that the Weinsteins picked Gwyneth for that part, as Miramax had previously produced her movies Emma and The Pallbearer, and liked her.

    YOU LIE, Winona!

@manchops: I find it very hard to believe that Gwyneth, who already had a highly acclaimed British period piece ("Emma") under her belt at the time, would need to steal a role from Winona, whose only attempt at a period piece (Dracula, I believe) was so bad, and her British accent so horrendous, it was unwatchable. I don't care for Gwyneth's GOOP blog, or some of her movie choices, but the girl can act. The only reason why Winona was decent in Reality Bites is because she had to play herself (minus the cleptomania bit, which, if we're going to talk about someone with the potential to steal...) #winonaryder

@manchops: I do love these Oscar-related cat fights, they're such sordid fun. BTW, Winona also scratched at Angelina Jolie in a recent interview--claiming she fought to get her on board for Girl, Interrupted and implying she deserved Angie's gratitude for her subsequent Oscar. Instead, Angie was apparently a "cold" bitch to her. Meow!

@skahammer: Girlfriend in a Coma; Hey, Nostradamus; the Gum Thief; Eleanor Rigby...I actually don't think there's much he's written that I don't like! Shampoo Planet was a little rough around the edges, I couldn't quite get into All Families Are Psychotic, JPod was weird but by the end I was totally enraptured.

Even if you don't like him as a writer, how did he sell out? By writing Generation A, I guess would be the answer, but why can't he reflect on something that has so shaped his career? Especially since this idea of the death of Generation X seems to be on a lot of minds lately.

PS. I know you were asking Richard and not me, and me just naming titles doesn't really make him not a sell out, I'm just confused and kneejerk annoyed by him being included and this was the only comment actually talking about him. #winonaryder

@karatemonkey: Perfectly in-bounds, and merci. I'm actually quite heartened to know that someone's keeping up with Coupland, and to hear some actual testimony that the impression I formed (i.e., that the man's tank was emptying very quickly by the time of Microserfs) was wrong.

@skahammer: I love Microserfs probably too much. But Coupland is pretty prolific, especially when you count all his non-fiction work. I can see, though, how you would get that impression--his work is touted, rightfully so, as internationally bestselling, yet I get a lot of blank stares when I bring up his name as one of my favorite writers. And his work after Microserfs does seem disconnected from that and from Generation X, even if they have a lot of the same themes.

<--spends too much time thinking about this. #winonaryder

So this has little to do with nearly 90% of the cast of Friends, among copious others, who dated the front man for the Counting Crows, or the sycophantic love of Hootie and the Blowfish in the mid 90's? Because I thought Generation X was over at that point. #winonaryder
