An 89-year-old man was arrested at his house in North Philadelphia this week on charges of aiding and abetting Nazi atrocities while working as a guard at the Auschwitz and Buchenwald concentration camps during World War II.
Dick Winters's exploits during the invasion of Normandy (and other battles) were depicted in HBO's sweeping 2001 miniseries Band of Brothers, about airborne division Easy Company's WWII campaign. He passed away in Pennsylvania January 2nd, at the age of 92.
Edith Shain, the nurse in one of the most memorable photographs from World War Two, died Sunday at the age of 91. The picture, taken in Times Square on V-J Day after the Japanese surrender, appeared in Life magazine. [Life]
