    Ugh! It always astounds me that a House of Schlock and Ersatz Soap Opera like the WWE is so wildly successful, while genuine fighting which is filled with drama and masterful technique like Mixed Martial Art events go relatively unknown. I blame it on the UFC's dumb and myopic marketing decisions, from the 90s, where they chose to portray the contests as no-holds-barred brutal cage-fighting with no rules. That false image haunts the UFC and other MMA organizations to this day. Also, what's happening with the WWE's popularity is a metaphor for America: we prefer the fake to the real, and the shamelessly shallow to the substantive.
    While I'm not a huge Chris Dodd fan, here's hoping he has Linda McMahon for lunch while Dana White provides the condiments.

    @Wrapitup: Real fighting is ugly, as the UFC shows reliably. The WWE provides absurdist theater with a high amusement factor.

    The WWE is the heir of the old vaudeville shows.

    @Wrapitup: Yeah, it's pretty much a theater production of a superhero action story. Its historical roots in the circus industry is a large factor in its success, and I happen to be one of those old fans who watched with his parents back in the ol' days, and then on my own when I was an angsty, middle-schooler in the mid-to-late '90s.

    And wait a second... MMA is relatively unknown? That's a pretty big claim, considering the recent boom and notoriety of the sport, and how it has since overshadowed Boxing, completely.

    @Julio Esquivel: Aight, lemme modify that to say 'not as well-known as WWE'. You don't see MMA fighting on network TV like with WWE and extraordinarily great fighters like Anderson Silva or Fedor Emelianenko are really not household names like the WWE's Big Show or John Cena. The WWE is part of American, and even world, pop culture. Their 'stars' go on talk shows and appear in B movies. Sure a few MMA stars have had brief forays into showbiz like Chuck Liddell but the vast majority of them have nowhere near the name recognition of the average WWE star. I think the commenter above you had it right when he mentioned that real fighting can get pretty hardcore, which is something that many parents wouldn't want their kids to see. The WWE can thus market to kids much better than the UFC can. However Dana White has promised a network TV deal next year. So I'll be looking forward to the UFC kicking the WWE's ass.
