@The Boulevard of Broken Queens: He seems like one of those guys that would show an empty room and call it a profound statement on modern life.

Oh, that "street cred in Japan" stuff was silly, but I love Nara's "I'm too young to die" ashtray. I would buy one if I knew I wouldn't just throw it against a wall during a future temper tantrum.

They should cut out the sections of the walls with his art on it and sell it. It’ll pay for the cost of the wall and probably discourage the artist from doing it again.

@iplaudius: sell it to whom? Nobody's is buying art--witness Armory, Scope, and my empty savings account.

@diehausfrau: I'll be interested to see what happens to the value of his work over time actually. Nara and Marlene Dumas were having a pretty tough competition for most overvalued artist there for a while.

@sharpiefinepoint: wow, for overvalued I would have picked Hirst, Koons, and Peyton. Dumas never really worked for the Wall-Street set.

@diehausfrau: were armory and scope (and volta and pulse and bridge and pool and fountain and and and) really that bad? everyone I spoke to seemed OK - not great, but not suicidal. PM me?

@diehausfrau: I think those three will all hold their value, but I hope I'm wrong. Nara and Dumas are certainly in a different financial bracket; I suppose what I mean is I think they're a) muddy or b) doodly (I think you can figure out which is which), and their prices at auction always seemed to surprise me.

Street art used to be the tool of poor kids raging against a system that oppressed them, kids who didn't have the access or werewithall to find spaces to display their work. Now its spoiled douchbag pseudo-pop artists and hipsters just continuing their pillaging of hood culture. Lock them the fuck up.

I have mixed feelings on street art. I live in Bushwick, and yes, I've seen some great stuff. However, plenty of people like the DickChicken guy walk around spraying things that in addition to being obscene are just plain ugly. If I had kids, I wouldnt want them walking by giant chickens with penises for heads on their way to school every day. There's no underlying message there, it's basically just highschool bathroom stall stupidity. I would totaly support arrest and fines in those cases, and then you run into the problem of who gets to judge. Legalizing it overall is just not practical. Maybe in some pre-defined spaces?

It wasn't vandalism that he was arrested for, it's just that the MTA doesn't want any representations of happy people that might contrast with the actual misery of the passengers.

When a Japanese dude even contemplates, and then gets arrested for graffiti, and then gets "street cred" in Japan for it, maybe it's time for us all to move on to some other form of anti-establishment statement.

@son of spam: I agree - but the notion of "street cred" in Japan at all is pretty ridiculous. I'm not sure who on this TV crew said this - obviously someone who's been in New York too long.

Japan is not a culture that celebrates notoriety. Consider the fact that they kick people out of pop groups for smoking.
