"I want to be Angelina Jolie’s assistant in Cambodia," she exclaims. "She’s doing all this amazing UN goodwill work. I would just love to hang out there, hang out with movie stars but help land mine victims, too. I think there’s too little glamour in volunteer work." #minlieskovsky
She desperately needs Rushdie's help w/ that thesis: genocide is kinda like or like or is a religion in Cambodia? Religion is a kind of belief and ritual. And it's human capabilities I'm interetesed in not signing gorillas or piano playing cats. And death is like another human capability except that when people do it to their own people it is living death. Kinda like living. Or like death? I need to go someplace dangerous now like Phuket. #minlieskovsky
She's an idiot. The Khmer Rouge's destruction of Cambodian society was not genocide as genocide is the decimation of a race/ethnicity/religion etc. simply because they are a certain race/ethnicity/religion, etc. Just because it was all Cambodians who died doesn't mean its genocide- it was Cambodian on Cambodian violence; the only major difference between the Khmer Rouge and their victims were social class (but usually they were indiscriminant). I think a Harvard student writing a senior thesis should be able to figure it out- it's not that hard. #minlieskovsky
@somethingsfishy: Actually, Cambodia is home to several different ethnic groups. The Khmer Rouge did indeed participate in ethnic cleansing in order to achieve an ethno-cultural -- which they believed would eventually evolve into political -- homogeneity. #minlieskovsky
"I'm really interested in human capabilities, which is why I'm interested in poetry, music, stuff like that. Genocide is just another one of those human capabilities, it's how you basically live death.
ah yeah... so I like things that are related to human beings... ah um... I like um poetry, and music, and sandwiches, and plumbing, and aerospace engineering, and cello, and classical renaissance acting and restoration drama... yeah I'm really interested in all these things... The boys tell me I'm too smart but uh, ah they're just not interested in things. Oh skin care, I'm really interested in skin care, oh and learning latin. Also I'd really love to travel the world. I understand there are SO many other humans all around the world. Yeah... I'm pretty smart... I have so many interests... what? study one? why would I do that? It would take too much time away from all my OTHER interests. Besides, I just have to be open to them and love them and um... everything will ah.. .you know come together. What? What does dilletante have to do with me? Idiot? Who's an idiot? The models all say I'm pretty smart. #minlieskovsky
@aureliajones: You are probably right that there will be fewer of them, though watch out for the pre-med kids (they will cut you) and beware the social science airheads who are there to fulfill a “quant” requirement.
Also, consider that math departments tend to be very international and that success at the graduate level does not require strong English skills. If you are a native English speaker, your sections will likely be swamped and overcrowded. You may even have students from other sections coming to your office hours and sending you emails. Your best defense may be to fake an impenetrable foreign accent and adopt strange physical affectations during the first few weeks of class. #minlieskovsky
@iplaudius: A foreign accent and strange physical affectations will make you fit right in with the math department. That's par for the course here at Caltech. #minlieskovsky
@bens: And, sadly, you will find nothing of Min Lieskovsky’s caliber—though, after awhile, you won’t notice. I believe it’s called “Caltech Vision.” Like beer goggles, but more sober, more glasses.
@aureliajones: I'm a math grad student now, first year... I promise, smug algebraists and ultra-competitive Chinese students are way worse than this breed of attractive dilettante. #minlieskovsky
"I don't know if she has any human traits really" is utterly, glacially magnificent -- like what Nabokov would have said about a particularly unpleasant commissar if they had both been Sigma Kappas. #minlieskovsky
@skahammer: The female protagonist in The Ground Beneath Her Feet is a mythological composite. As removed from reality as you can get. Good read, not one of Rushdie's true knockouts, methinks. #minlieskovsky
Jesus, take it easy. We get it: you and Angelina and Megan Fox and the other self-congratulatory clique want us all to know that you are a dilettante of a different stripe.
You objectify and prey on the weakest and most insecure of men. You carry a pedigree. You stare danger in the eye. You challenge conventions. You aspire to Zelig-like background ubiquity in the popular culture.
I'll take the strong, silent type over this any day of the week. I like women with the thousand yard stare, myself. #minlieskovsky
"You objectify and prey on the weakest and most insecure of men."
Your statement was not in reference to Rushdie? I must be losing my reading and comprehension skills. No matter, I've learned my lesson: You're not to be engaged with and I apologize if I've caused you offense. #minlieskovsky

Yeah, time to date a writer.
