This would be a boost for the widget sector — if such a thing could be said to exist. Widgetbox, a directory of code snippets which can be used to enliven web pages, is thought to have landed funding from Silicon Valley's premier venture capital firm. Ed Anuff's lastest venture, which received $1.5m in seed funding from Hummer Winblad, has raised another round from Sequoia, the Sand Hill Road firm. This isn't a typical Sequoia investment. More than other Valley venture funds, Mike Moritz's partnership tends to back big ideas, and consumer brands such as Google and Youtube, rather than more vulnerable web middlemen such as Widgetbox. The news isn't confirmed: Anuff, a web veteran who led Wired's first site, said: "Sequoia? It's a type of Redwood tree, isn't it?" Cute.
