Two Buildings Collapse In India, Killing At Least 11, Trapping Dozens

A building in New Delhi, India, as well as a building in the southern city of Chennai, collapsed within hours of each other on Saturday, killing at least 11. Authorities fear that dozens more are trapped in the wreckage of both buildings.

[UPDATE 6/30/14 8:43 am]: At least 41 people have been rescued in New Delhi from the 11-story building that collapsed on Saturday. Reports say that at least 26 have died and 5 have been detained.

According to a report in the Associated Press, the New Delhi building was over 50 years old and located in a poorer section of the city. The 12-story building on the outskirts of Chennai was under construction at the time and collapsed only hours later.

Most homes in the New Delhi area where the first building collapsed had been built without permission and using substandard materials, police officer Madhur Verma said.

The Press Trust of India news agency said the New Delhi collapse was triggered by construction work on an adjacent plot.
