Harbinger of fall and Thought Catalog’s sophisticated drink of choice, Starbucks’ Pumpkin Spice Latte has a lot of fans. Some of these fans were even vegans until they discovered the latte mix was filled with condensed milk. But now, instead of just giving up and choosing to face the scary future without a daily Venti soy PSL, the vegans are mobilizing. Again.
In a circulating Change.org petition addressed to Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz, Brent Caldwell of Ferndale, Michigan begins:
I am a huge fan of Starbucks. My girlfriend and I will visit our favorite location up to four times a week. We are also both vegan. Normally this is not a tremendous issue at Starbucks because so many drinks can be made with vegan and dairy-free ingredients, which generally just means using soy milk instead of cows milk.
But it apparently becomes a huge issue during PSL season, you see, and Caldwell wants Starbucks to take his complaint seriously so he uses bolds:
There is currently no vegan option for this drink mix, which is a total bummer. After speaking with numerous other friends of mine from across the country, I have decided to start this petition to ask Starbucks to please change the ingredients of this beloved beverage so that all of their loyal patrons may enjoy it every autumn — even the vegans and lactose-intolerant customers!
He makes his most convincing argument at the end of the petition, pointing out that Starbucks should ultimately change the recipe because “nothing about 'pumpkin' or 'spice' has to come from an animal!”
As the world waits to see if the PSL recipe changes, Starbucks told the Consumerist that there is a vegan alternative available as “VIA Pumpkin Spice instant coffee flavor doesn’t contain dairy, and can be brewed with soy milk.”
For any other misled vegans who go to Starbucks four times a week, also milk-filled are the white chocolate and caramel sauces.
