It was<a href="http://gawker.com/5095291/hippie-folksinger-invades-wsj-newsroom"> hilariously revealed </a>a couple weeks ago that hippie folk singer <a class="autolink" rel="nofollow" title="Click here to read more posts tagged ANI DIFRANCO" title="Click here to read more posts tagged ANI DIFRANCO" href="http://gawker.com/tag/ani-difranco/">Ani DiFranco</a> personally played a set for capitalist <em>Wall Street Journal</em> staffers in their actual building, for some reason. Former MSNBC host Dan Abrams is a popular guy, because it's been rumored that he has jobs to give out. Abrams, you'll recall, is starting a ridiculous,<a href="http://gawker.com/5093610/dan-abrams-tries-to-explain-away-obvious-conflicts-of-interest-fails"> conflict-of-interest-riddled PR firm </a>that will distinguish itself by selling corporate clients (or just <a href="http://gawker.com/5093023/why-would-ronald-perelman-need-better-press">moguls</a>) the advice of <a href="http://gawker.com/5092703/dan-abrams-ring-of-media-informants">current journalists, bloggers, and other media types</a>. The <em>Observer</em> <a href="http://www.observer.com/2008/media/we-look-forward-speaking-mr-abrams-his-earliest-convenience">spoke to Abrams</a>, and he says he's gotten 650 applications already&mdash;"the bulk of whom are freelance journalists, people who are writing books and individuals who have recently been laid off or walked away from jobs in the media industry." Are we<em> missing </em>something here? <a href="http://gawker.com/5099196/dan-abrams-defends-straw-man-version-of-his-new-pr-firm" title="Click here to read more about Dan Abrams Defends Straw Man Version Of His New PR Firm">More&nbsp;&raquo;</a>

Pirates! Pirates! Dangerous Somali Pirates! Their<a href="http://gawker.com/5056886/last-cool-thing-ruined-by-pr"> PR man </a>is surely fielding job offers left and right. Boosaaso is the new adventure reporting destination du jour! The pirates currently holding a huge oil tanker may be<a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601116&sid=agQD81VbJHmI&refer=africa"> reducing their ransom demands</a>. The financial reports of the New York Times Co. yesterday <a href="http://gawker.com/5095007/new-york-times-earnings-news-is-nothing-but-bad-news">were predictably awful</a>. Print ad revenue was cratering even<em> before</em> the stock market collapsed, so it's hard to see any turnaround in the near future. And as if the economy itself isn't giving the <em>Times </em>enough problems, they're also dealing with Rupert Murdoch trying to crush them, advertising-wise, in a pincer grip; the <em>Wall Street Journal</em> is falling on their head, and the <em>New York Post</em> is coming right up their ass. <a href="http://gawker.com/5096027/rupert-murdochs-two+way-assault-on-the-nyt" title="Click here to read more about Rupert Murdoch's Two-Way Assault On The NYT">More&nbsp;&raquo;</a>

Dave Kansas, a former editor at the <em>Wall Street Journal</em> and TheStreet.com, is out as the president of personal finance site FiLife.com, <a href="http://www.portfolio.com/views/blogs/mixed-media/2008/11/18/kansas-out-as-president-of-iacs-filife?tid=true"><em>Portfolio</em> reports</a>. Kansas will keep a title with FiLife, but it'll be as "editor at large." And given his connections to the WSJ newsroom, we wouldn't be surprised to see him land back there eventually. But Kansas is a reminder that journalists &mdash; especially reporters on media and financial beats &mdash; are particularly prone to thinking they could do a better job than the folks who handle the money in the business&mdash;the only people, it seems, who stand any chance of getting rich. <a href="http://gawker.com/5092474/business-of-journalism-is-still-ill+suited-for-business-journalists" title="Click here to read more about Business of Journalism Is Still Ill-Suited for Business Journalists">More&nbsp;&raquo;</a>
