Can't forget the closing of the LURE on 13th(which somehow managed to stay open after the Mineshaft was shut) in 2003. But it was inevitable after it became a requisite stop for B&T couples to see exactly what went on in leather bars before wandering down the street to Apt. Come to think of it, $12 cocktails are a form of S&M, so at least the spirit of the MPD lives on.

SkyBoy

They left out a whole friggin' century, not to mention the all important 70s. No mention of the the Hellfire club, which, if I recall correctly (and i was very drunk at the time....)is now one of those big horrible restuarants. And oh - remmeber when they closed down the Mineshaft and everyone was SHOCKED they removed a whole bunch of bathtubs?? There was even a lesbian S&M place. I wish the S&M places would come back so we could whip all those dopey people who go there now and think they're cool.

LoVegas

Another glaring omission:

The day the venerable Rio Mar Spanish restaurant (with the tackiest juke box ever and free peanuts in the shell) closed, that's when it all went to seed.

grandenchilada

The passing of Rio Mar to the Richard Johnson DWI arrest are the touchstones of the decline. However, the steaks at Macelleria are better than that crap they serve in Williamsburg.

dado

A glaring omission: The Village Idiot

Sure the Village Idiot was located on the wrong side of Ninth Avenue, and so didn't officially count as a denizen of the meat packing district. But no history of the area is complete without it. The bar moved to the corner of Ninth Ave and Fourteenth Street from the east village in 1994. Until it shuttered its doors for the last time at half past four in the summer of 2004, the Idiot was a dive bastion of cheap beer, fast whiskey and good times in a neighborhood that was quickly becoming overwhelmed by $12 cocktail joints and velvet rope nightclubs.

It's still missed. But sadly, even I have to admit the Idiot would be out of place in the 'hood these days. Its time passed too quickly but two years later we can agree that it definitely passed. As the banner above the bar said on that last night: "Live Fast. Love Hard. Die Young."

You were too young to die, Idiot. But then again, we all were.

John Carney
