If a "live performance diorama designed to reenact a photo of the Wesleyan Women's Graduation of 1891" in the "tableau vivant" style during reunion doesn't provide enough evidence, I don't know what will. Oh wait, there's also a couple of "free-wheeling" cyclists on a Ye Olde Timey bicycle, perhaps taken at Spring Fling. We're encouraged to guess what year.

I don't know any SLC or Wesleyan alums, and I don't know much about either school. SLC got my vote based on user comments, but those still on the fence should also consider that the Washington Monthly ranked Wes #2 among liberal arts colleges, while SLC comes in at #139. So on a tuition-dollars-to-academic-merit... scale, SLC clearly wins.

I don't really know whether to feel proud or embarrassed by the fact that I was "that child" (minus the "doesn't really like learning" part), which is probably why I chose SLC in the above poll, even though I am a proud alum and had a great four years there. But really, even I can admit that a college with the tagline, "You are different, so are we," should win (?) this death match based on that alone.

If you're going to find Wesleyan annoying, find it annoying for the right reasons. Some commenter mentioned some anecdote about his brother getting into the naked dorm. The naked dorm doesn't exist. Also, students aren't forced to use the pronoun "ze" because most students have probably never even heard the word.

I'm voting for Sarah Lawrence to un-vote your vote on false terms, and because there are too many smokers at SLC.

On a side note, if I could really vote for any academic institution, it would be Harvard. That's just a factory of annoying. Is it an unspoken Harvard student rule that to go there you have to wear every single piece of Harvard apparel on the market at once?

I'll also add a reason why Wes is the most annoying, namely the head of the Asexuality Visibility and Education Network, who was a member of my class. He wore rollerblades constantly, whether at Mocon or leading tours of prospective students. One thing no one ever saw him do, however, was form a romantic attachment to another person, male or female.

Seriously, if you loved Bard, you know how long it takes us to do ANYTHING. That includes voting, impishly, for ourselves. Luckily, I feel just entitled enough to ask for either an extension of the previous vote, or that you squeak us into the finals. Sure, we didn't fulfill the requirements, but when has that stopped us from getting into any class, ever? If you really liked us, you'd be more interested in our success.

So here's the thing - I went to SLC and I (or any self-respecting/self-deprecating grad) can tell more stories that would close this debate once and for all than we should be able to remember. But I think we're loosing sight of the fun, the joy, the sheer exuberance and misguided creativity that was behind those stories and the went into making these colleges so LIBERAL, so ARTSY...

Everyones telling these stories like they are BAD things...I DECIDED to go to SLC because my campus tour was led by a girl with a mustache(JD from Le Tigre) who was super cool and proud of the little freak community that was SLC. She then showed us down a hill that was sparkling in the sunlight with what looked like a thousand crystals growing through the grass. JD matter-of-factly informed us that each clear plastic straw represented a hundred victims of whatever was the late-90s Darfur equivalent. Self-indulgent, silly, but so sweetly sincere - that's how I like to remember SLC.

I should have known things were awry the first night I was there when I received my first harassing phone call from someone who wanted to know what I was wearing. About a month later, I was told by a friend of a friend that I couldn't sit with my friend's group during lunch because said friend of friend thought "meal time was sacred time" and my presence at meal time was getting in the way of their sacred mealtime vibe. Then there was the homeless dude in December '99/Jan 2000 who peed on/ejaculated in people's stuff over the winter break and the infamous Sarah Lawrence flasher -- one of the few times SLC made the news, other than for Fawaz Gerges. Then there was my housemate who kept banging a flashlight on the wall instead of asking me to turn the volume of the TV down.

There are a lot of good things about SLC too. The teachers are excellent and it's not all trust fund kids who want to get drunk/high and do no work as indicated in the comment above. It was just a weird social environment to be in at times.

Did we forget to mention "sleaze week" where you can take workshops or pornography, dental damn usage and the female ejaculation? oh yes. The finale of which is the friday night sleaze ball which, my sophomore year, turned into a weird dominatrix s&m show that was so alarming it caused me to go to my room and shudder until dawn. Seriously though, slc was the shit. thomas lux, Fawaz gerges, grace paley, jospeh campbell, and smoking joints on the roof of the glorious Georgian mansion-cum-music building while the chamber choir had practice is one of the best memories i have.

also,NYU kids used to come into yonxville for our parties cause they knew theyd get to see girls make out.

also, last weekend i met a decidedly non-annoying wesleyan grad who seemed like an actual, functioning person. she even had (or claimed to have) a real job as a "financial analyst," which is astonishing because i didn't know liberal arts colleges could produce people capable of doing anything related to finance. so i vote sarah lawrence.

There was also the guy who did a senior thesis project on roller coasters and spent spring break driving around the country to go to as many amusement parks as possible, and he was a poet.

I graduated with a strong tendency to say to people who asked if I was vegetarian, "No, I enjoy the charred flesh of dead animals." Of course since then, I've met even more militant vegans and they can get remarkably violent for people who lack specific amino acids in their diets.

I'm troubled that this is a contest for most annoying college and Wesleyan clearly has graduate programs in several fields - all of the sciences, psychology, the music department not to mention their MLA stuff, and I'm sure I'm forgetting more.

I still think that Smith should be in the running. Temporarily able. That's all I have to say.

Ahh, but they do! Maybe not acid so much but certainly all of the other drugs. That's the irony here- as an alumna of one of the annoying LACs and a drop-out of a REALLY annoying Ivy grad school, I can attest to the fact that there is as much drug abuse at the latter as at the former. If not more!! And the justification - "We're stressed out from all of the energy we expend on our studies"- is bogus, to boot (more like energy expended while desperately attempting to cover up our outrageous plagiarism, lack of critical ability, etc.).

The fact is, acid won't help if, deep down, you are a two-dimensional asstard.

But more about those 7 ft. blue rabbots, please!

I've still not seen anything written about W or SL that is any weirder than the shit at Bard while I was there including:

1. Dude whose senior project was building a scarecrow setting it on fire and dancing around it talking about the "Corn God."

2. Dress To Get AIDS parties

3. Bow Tie Wearing University President who has been president since he was 14 or something.

4. "Liberal Arts Mathematics G." A course that you could take to fulfil your math requirement. One class consisted of the professor walking in, playing the piano for a while and telling us to go home and write an essay about "how the music was green."

Regarding Wesleyan vs. SLC, if those are the final choices, I have to weigh the musical my ex wrote about vampires, vs. the opus about boxing written by my ex-roommate. Honestly, it's a hard call, but I think the synthesizers win and I'm going to have to go with Wesleyan.

however, and i haven't followed this from the beginning, so maybe someone has mentioned it, sarah lawrence has the added pretension of misleading pretty much everyone as to their location. it's pretty easy to do in that part of westchester county, because the postal delivery lines do not correspond with the actual town borders. (the public school systems lines are drawn in still other ways so kids living in one part of a town will end up at a highschool in a totally different town. also it all seems kind of random). so anyway, slc has a bronxville -address-, and bronxville is just the sort of waspy upper middle class place slc's desired student body would be drawn to, but it is actually in yonkers, which just doesn't have the same place-to-open-the-countries-most-expensi... cache.

If you weren't dirty, crunchy, hippie-like womyn, or girls that shaved their heads bald in protest of patriarchy, or a "LUGS" (lesbians until graduation) who went right back into their Laura Ashley dresses on graduation in order to ride back home to tony NY suburbs in Mom's mercedes, or picking the Middletown goodwill clean for ironic pantsuits, or raging heroine addicts...then you were me and my friends-probably viewed as outcasts on campus but "normal" in the rest of the world.

I certainly don't regret the great education I got there, but I sometimes regret not having any "college was soooo fun" stories to remember.

Oh well.

By the way, The Princeton Review should reverse snobby and intellectual in that description. The thought of the Ivy League calling Reedies snobs is pretty damn funny.

No one has heard of the place. There's no serious prestige in getting in. Reed students are the first to admit that they are too screwed up to have gone anywhere else. They are poorly socialized intellectuals fit only for working in academia or a coffee shop which is different from being ambitious Ivy League snobs.

Wesleyan students have got their [you-know-what] together like no one you ever meet. They're those ideal college kids who are every bit as intellectual and driven as any Ivy Leaguer, every bit as snobby about it as a Reed student, every bit as hip as a RISD student, and yet as crunchy and earthy as a UC-Berkeley student.
