You know when you're at a dinner party, or a wedding, or something, and someone stands up to give a speech, and it starts out all right, with a few jokes here and there, and then it starts to take a turn for the worse, and no one knows what to say, because no one wants to be impolite, so they just go with it, and it just descends further and further into nonsense and lunacy that when it's finally over, no one's really sure what to say or do, so the slow clap starts and fades out after thirty seconds, and then someone shouts "Cheers!" just to break the awkward, crippling silence?
