Anyway, I am a woman and recent grad of Harvard and also have some good (in a few cases best) friends that were members of the Phoenix (another Finals club) but even I recognize how douchey this is. It just touches on so many ignored race/class issues (and disasters) that exist at our school.

And don't you find a problem with him having to find a date that "fits in" in these (often pretty racist/sexist) ways?

I might also write to Vanity Fair about their "green" issue. It probably would have meant more to me if they didn't refuse to use recycled paper because it's too "expensive" (then cut back on your budget and don't fly celebrities all across the world just to have a picture of them with a penguin on your cover) and wrap the magazine in plastic.

But "green" is "trendy" so I don't let it bother me. And that is my favorite magazine - it's the only magazine that I look foward to getting every month. They have the best writers and the articles are always excellent.

The lack of reasoning (critical or otherwise) is clearly with you. My original comment was based on the words of a particular person. Based on those words, I suggested (with an attempt at humor (perhaps weak or not to your liking) and a nod to the recent news) that he had the makings of a Republican congressman. Whether that is true of some significant minority or of the majority of Harvard students is irrelevant, given that this was the posting of one person. I don't dislike this person. Everyone dislikes this person. The people I knew at Harvard (and most of the people I have since met in the world) would never utter the words that this guy did. That's what makes him a douche. And the long list of recent Republican miscreants (Duke Cunningham, Marc Foley, Craig and now this Assitant U.S. Attorney, to name a few) are all douches. I would think that we could all agree on that.

It's clear that the douchebag in search of a date is looking not only for someone who meets high-society's beauty ideal, but who also is not emasculatingly intelligent. A woman who attends MIT, with her presumed propensity for Richard Feynman anecdotes and time-space continuum one-liners, is likely to embarrass such a callow and depthless young man. And although I hate to lend any credence to the stereotype that extremely bright women are socially addled, it seems that our dateless friend has bought into the notion that MIT co-eds are bucktoothed Asians, overweight loners, nerdy World-of-Warcraft players, and other types of women who don't know the cues which call for sparkling conversation or rapt silence.

I don't think it's unreasonable to assume that many (most?) Gawker readers are equipped with sophisticated frames of cultural reference. The conventional wisdom about Harvard tends to center around the privilege, wealth, and snob-appeal to which you allude. However, anyone who has spent any time at all at MIT notes its reputation for intellectual rigor. Their campuses and students populations are vastly disparate.

While this is probably not news to most commenters, obviously it is to NTJ. Certainly, I was mistaken when I presumed she shared the cultural context of the conversation. In the words of Monty Burns, she "couldn't find ugly at a Radcliffe mixer."

But you, Mr. Spiegelman? Someone who claims as much knowledge as you do about Ivy grads, the evils of the moneyed establishment, the ways of the world, etc. should be able to tell the difference between the overprivileged Harvard shits and the intelligent women who threaten them. Come down from your high horse and poke fun at the bourgeosie like the rest of us.

The fact is that most Americans enjoy a higher standard of living than many countries in the world. We have clean hospitals, access to health care and low unemployment. We live way better than most people in the world. I'm not trying to defend immoral rich people (they're horrible) but you can't blame those colleges. The people who go to those schools aren't any worse than anyone else. They're arrogant and probably obsessed with making money but that doesn't destroy the world. In this country we believe in capitalism and people are allowed to become rich and not all companies will be able to compete but that is the way our system works.

I don't have much sympathy for Apple because I believe they would do the same thing to Bill Gates if they had the chance. They sold iphones for a price that they knew was too high and then a few weeks later lowered the price because they weren't selling that well - they obviously are focused mostly on making money.

I brag and brag about coming out of Queens College because, while it's not likely many of us will change the world coming from a club with so few rich members, it's even less likely that anyone of us will discover fun new ways to poison huge numbers of people in a few seconds flat (MIT) or how to swindle lots and lots of middle class and poor people out of their life savings (Harvard).

The student bodies of MIT, Harvard, Yale, etc., are certainly not made up entirely of repugnant little fuckers who'll go on to produce fabulous new weapons and fabulous new schemes to gather more and more of a nation's wealth among themselves and their families, but there certainly are a fucking lot of them on the roster.

Most of us will have to suffer them endlessly when they become adults. Let us please just ignore them while they're still just sniveling asshole kids.

He wants someone "appropriate" who doesn't dress in a trashy way or someone who looks like they are on drugs or something. There isn't anything wrong with that. I wasn't referring to race there.

But I don't care if he asks for someone specifically white because there could be an explanation for it. Maybe all his friends are white and anything else would make him uncomfortable. Everyone is allowed personal preference when choosing who they socialize with - some black people prefer other black people and some hispanics prefer other hispanics. There is nothing wrong with that.

I'm more concerned with equality for all races at work and having the same education opportunities and not facing discrimination because of their race. I don't care if someone only prefers to socialize with white women. It's not important.

He just ended a relationship and doesn't want to go to an event alone. It seems shallow and superficial to ask for certain appearance requirements but what if he got someone who looked like a prostitute or a drug addict? He just wants to make sure he has someone appropriate. He needs to make sure they are the same age range as his friends. The part about the colleges is probably because he is worried she won't have much in common with his friends or something like that. I don't get the MIT part but maybe they're rival colleges.

Essentially he wants an "escort" for the night. There doesn't seem to be anything that bad about it. You can look at it another way - it's a great opportunity for the woman to meet sucessful, educated men so she is getting something out of it also.

He seems arrogant but many smart people at those colleges are so that isn't anything new.
