There are many "work-only" buildings out there in which, on the whole, you'll find more interesting people operating studios and small art-based businesses.

The problem I saw when I lived there was that the McKibbin Street landlords were getting kids through brokers and were letting anyone who could get their parents to guaranty their rent move in. As early as 2004, there were practically no working studios in the building anymore, just recent BFA grads and "musicians" going through the motions of a lifestyle that was already cliche 10 years ago. It's a sterile kind of scene populated by third-rate bands and "artists" who haven't produced a single thing since getting out of school. These kids mostly have token "jobs" along with heavy family subsidies until they "make it", which means moving back to their pathetic hometowns before they turn 25, broke, drug-addicted and totally worthless.
