As far as I know, out of 170-odd CS PhD candidates up here at Columbia, we have one African-American (actually he's from Barbados). He's brilliant, but that's just one student for IBM, Google, MS Research, etc. to fight over.

The department would love to enroll qualified black students, and I'm sure Google would love to hire them, but at this stage of the educational system, the damage from the lower tiers is already done.

I am sincerely happy that life is so simple for you. After writing my first post I recalled an incident from my childhood. I went to a racially mixed elementary school in a poor neighborhood in an outer-borough. My mother was extremely upset to learn that the deadline for the citywide entrance exam to a competitive upper-level public school had passed. The school simply hadn't bothered to tell anyone about it because they simply assumed that no one would be willing to make the commute.

A couple of wrong turns, negligent or non-existent counseling, and your life can be truly f--ked.

This is a class problem as well as a race and color issue. But being poor and black is worse.

Google is monster powerful and I while I don't know their staff stats, I wouldn't be surprised if it was way too white. America is still racist and classist (class based on money.) Most other first world countries, probably all, are. The human being is defensive and clannish. Having lived as a foreigner in a country where I stand out, I know what it's like on a daily basis to be the only me in the room, the subway car, the town, the coffee shop, to be pointed at and stared at and not trusted by the neighbors, followed by security guards through a store and accused of shoplifting (that last was when I wore a motorcycle jacket and had pink-streaked hair). And I know that's a fraction of what most african-americans go through in day to day life.

But the commenting here has gotten weird. The cynicism and humor does get too bratty and snotty
but that's a side effect of free-range commenting. But I think we need to be a little more careful (and not in the PC sense), to read through comments and think before we write. Ech, that didn't come out like I wanted. Oh well. Responses, please?

I dated a Googler about 2 years ago, and while times may have changed, I doubt life in her LA office is much tougher now than it was back then. They had free meals cooked by gourmet chefs. They had an elaborate employee gym. They had to take a mandatory "20% personal time" per day -- the idea being that, if employees devote about 20% of their time to personal passion projects, Google could later claim intellectual ownership of the fruits of those labors. It's all quite evil and manipulative, in a way reminiscent of the old "company towns" from the 1800s, or perhaps The Matrix. Life seems really sweet, but it's all in service of your dark master.

I never got to visit the Mountain View, CA mega-office, but supposedly it's a veritable shangri-la of decadence and dotcom excess.
