I think making a private email public is much worse than being a jerk. If someone did that to me I would make a truly fallacious and nevertheless winning argument ad baculum. Or maybe ad baccalà, I love those filets.

In regard to credentials, I don't mean lying or adding a skill or experience or achievement that you don't have. For instance, on a resume, do you state things in the way that is least beneficial to your case, as neutrally as possible (even if it may damage your chances), or in the way that is most beneficial to your case? Do you in all instances qualify things that might be more honest if qualified, but might not sound as good? Do you omit things at which you failed, if any? Do you list items that are not relevant but are impressive? In my practiced opinion, a resume is a form of advertising. Some people are accomplished and modest, it's true, and even honest--but does such a person mention having been fired from a critical position because of a series of unfair and unproven accusations, for instance, unless someone asks directly? Does one mention a stalker as a reason for relocating?

The end result of adjusting everything so that it looks its best and omits or plays down any bad bits is at least a slight inflation. (Brownie's resume probably says he was director of a critical government agency and was commended for his work by the president.)

As for your No. 2, if MacPherson had followed that advice, on of the best letters ever written would not exist:

I've been in a lot of humiliating situations where I've gotten my come-uppance. It wasn't pleasant, but it taught me to watch what I say and how I act and to treat people with respect.
