Needless to say it was kind of disturbing until I saw two guys have the same exact reaction I did. I just figured it was an sound design installation. One thing the article fails to mention is that the hypersonic sound beams actually have a tactile effect on the body as well. Depending on the direction your facing in relation to the brick wall on the north side of the street, the sound waves will have an isobaric effect. It literally felt like I got felt-up by the billboard lady while she was whispering wierd nothings into my ear. Pretty cool for an ad.

I seem to remember reading about the use of sonic weapons in Iraq, and how law enforcement agencies here in the states were interested in it's application for crowd control here.

I'd also think that to deploy a device of this nature, they would have had to have obtained a permit, as the local city/county might be lible for civil damages, along with A&E, the advertiser,the ad board company, the folks that mounted the thing and the building owner.

Perhaps an ad should be taken out across from this one by the local chapter there of the Bar and Court TV that says

"And 73% of our members believe they could win a civil judgement in excess of $100,000 for victims of your sonic weapon...."

The speaker generates a narrow beam of ultrasound frequencies, not unlike a light beam, that are inaudible by themselves but can be heard when they interact with /*air*/, which converts the high frequencies to lower frequencies humans can hear.

ULTRASONIC sound actually /*reflects*/ off of any solid surface, not make it resonate. So this has nothing to do with your skull, but rather normal safe sound which is transmitted on a carrier frequency which has both directionality and locality.

Using normal speakers, to achieve the same effect, you'd keep the neighborhood up all night. Instead, even the tenant just below the units hears absolutely nothing. And once you cross Mulberry walking westbound, you hear nothing. And on the south side of Prince, you hear nothing.

I'm equally disappointed to see all the people in this virtual blogland jump to crazy alarmist conclusions before actually going to visit the location and judge for themselves.

One of the "pieces" was two rows of trees. When you walked between them, strange laughter would follow you. There were male voices, female voices, children's voices, all kinds of laughing. It was so ridiculously unsettling.

Then I looked out across the little pond and could make out the roof of the International Criminal Court. Milosevic was being tried when I was there.

I stood there looking at it while the trees laughed ominously at me.

Very strange.
