""THE ideal Gawker item," Nick Denton, the owner of Gawker Media, wrote in an instant message last month to a prospective hire, "is something triggered by a quote at a party, or an incident, or a story somewhere else and serves to expose hypocrisy, or turn conventional wisdom on its head."
Exactly what about this shallow, snarky post meets Denton's criteria? Cary Tennis writes beautifully, though sometimes pointlessly, and illuminates and validates the human condition of his readers in a way that is rare in this world. That is why people write to him and why people read him. Maybe if Gawker tried for some similar uniqueness of touch, I wouldn't be reading snide articles about them in the Times.

I think he's fabulous now. At the same time, I know I would have enjoyed making fun of him a long time ago too. I wouldn't have understood the column when I was 19, trying to rush the right sorority and hating everyone who seemed the least bit vulnerable. I wanted to be a winner. Fwiw, Cary isn't talking to people like that. He's talking to the people who won, and realized a lot of it was luck. And the people who lost, and realized the same thing. That takes a little bit of experience, and some clear-eyed observation, as well as the honesty to admit it.

I can see how that would be a column not everyone would want to read. But I honestly don't understand the hate. Self-awareness and empathy are really so that offensive that they must be shouted about for months and months and months? Give it up. This is like watching my best sorority girl friends pick on the people who aren't too cool. There's more to life than cool. And the cool enforcers get boring when they can't let it go.
