The comparisons between "accepted" religions and this cult which calls itself a church only for tax free purposes of course, is fair but probably not the best one.
A more apt comparison would possibly be the Cosa Nostra or The Masonic Orders located around the globe. These two clandestine organazations operate more akin to this cult of mindless losers and in the end all have ulterior unstated motives.
It's all about the money in the end and if you impede upon there moneymaking processes, you will pay a price (fair game, mob hits, hell the masons poisoned Mozart when they suspected he wrote an opera "magic flute" about them).

Yes, Scientology is different from other religions. Not because of their spiritual beliefs, but because they as an organization DO THINGS that other religions don't. They engage in coercive thought reform techniques, also known as brainwashing. Some might say that all religions brainwash their followers, but very few do what Scientology does. Other religions don't force their followers to sit in a room and not blink for hours. Other religions don't emotionally and psychologically abuse their followers to shatter their sense of identity. Other religions don't censor their followers.

And this is all separate from their more egregious, blatant criminal activity, like Operation Freakout, Operation Snow White, and the death of Lisa McPherson.

The most important thing I learned from reading "Cults in Our Midst" by Margaret Singer was that cults need not be religious in nature. The word "cult" merely describes the dynamics of a group. The religious aspect of Scientology serves only two purposes: tax-exempt status by the IRS, and the First Amendment to hide behind. Really, they are a company that brainwashes people, takes their money, treats them like sh!t, and gets them to work FOR the company.

I'd been mostly on foot, living out of a tent, with no time constraints, no schedule, and for much of the time, with a wonderful lover. Walking around the city, I found myself at the Scientology headquarters, where I was invited to take a "Stress test/personality quiz" (and have a free croisant). I said "sure". Having been in a state of blissful, stressless travel for the last three months, I passed their test with no "engrams" at all, totally shocking the man who gave me the test. I can still recall the expresion on his face as he said "I've never seen anything quite like this". I said, "yeah, I feel pretty well balanced", and walked out with a smile. I sincerely hope I messed with his mind, at least for a little while!! Peace.

I grasped the metal cylinders as the volunteer asked me questions about work, relationships, life in general. Each time I answered the needle on the machine would jump-- of course he was constantly adjusting/calibrating/messing with said "stress tester" the entire time. Afterwards he held in his hands a copy of Dianetics and told me how Scientology helped reduce the stress in his life. "Sweet" I said. "Can I have a free copy of the book?" Not so much. Unlike freedom, which only costs $1.05, stress reduction in the form of Dianetics costs $26.95 (at the time-- it was the hard cover though).

Lately, like especially unsightly and persistent pigeons, the "Church's" minions have been gathering around Powell Street BART, trying to snare lonely derelicts and tourists. Though the South Park episode on Scientology may have been pulled out of rotation (don't know, don't have cable), the animated description of Xenu's enslavement and freezing of those poor, poor aliens with a caption reading "This is what Scientologists actually believe" can be viewed at the Comedy Central website.
One trick I'd recommend to those wishing to write about Scientologists without attracting their attention: use some euphemisms, like "the Temple of the Dead Frozen Brainwashed Aliens." This defeats both Google and their clipping services, and they do have clipping services.

The Scientologists had a couple of large tables stacked with copies of Dianetics. There was a large sign on each table that read "FREE STRESS TEST". Is that how they get you to come over & then convert you? I'm confused.
