My favorite love story goes back a ways. My first relationship, in college, was more or less storybook. He was a dancer with a hot Euro accent, I was a closet-case from the prairie. I figured our first time was a one-night-stand, but he actually pursued me. We fell in love very quickly, for complementary reasons - he though he had already seen enough, and I hadn't seen anything.

Considering how young we were and how inevitable we felt, it actually took us a few months to say the l-word. One night, there was an activity he suddenly didn't want me to do. I was confused, he didn't have a problem with it before. But I didn't question it until the third or fourth time he swatted my hand away. "What's wrong with that?" "Nothing, nothing, let's just do other stuff!"

I was already in the habit of sneaking little notes into his bookbag, his notebooks, his coat pockets. "I'm thinking of you." "Can't wait to see you later." That kind of thing. So he went to take a shower and I wrote a note, opened his bag .. and out fell a jar of Tucks medicated pads.

A few days later he swats my hand away again and I don't give in. "Come on, why can't we do that?" "I just don't want to, OK?" I stare at him long and hard, and I can't help but crack a little smile. "I, um, saw something in your bag the other day." He stares back, and then slowly horrified he dives under the covers and starts whimpering. I reassure him that it's totally OK, I'd never judge him, it's not unattractive, it happens! Then he comes out from under the covers with tears on his face and says, "I love you" for the first time. I said it back. Then I joked, "If we ever have a kid, we're naming it Hemorrhoid."

We stayed together for two years.

Gay modern love as I have know it over the course of nearly 7 years of gay dating in NYC has included:
a) Only having to call the police once (co-dependent gay ex-Mormon who wouldn't leave);
b) Buying a dog for a 'ho I was convinced I was in love with (until he morphed into Mango). The pooch was a purebred white Pomeranian flown in from FL. Dumb, I know. Too bad I didn't get to keep the dog;
c) Blowing a guy on the first date in the bathroom of the old Cock (well, not the first hummer for a first date, but the first in the bathroom at that establishment);
d) Going on a date with someone from gay.com and meeting one of my best friends. We mutually realized there was no physical chemistry, but hit it off fabulously as friends. Lost touch with him a couple of years ago after his Adderall/Vallium/alcohol/Ambien addiction got out of hand. He expired himself last summer.
e) Being asked for money twice. Well, once really. The other time was a request to co-sign a student loan . . .

. . . among other things. And I don't think my experiences are more interesting than most gays of this city.
