I'm not sure that's true anymore, or at the least is changing fast as more yups move in and condos replace the peculiar old buildings. Rents are going up, and low rent always facilited writing. Where do the writers move next to find low(er) rents , Glendale? I think that's the name of it? Along the Brooklyn/Queens border out toward the Cross-Island?

The no-strings-attached half-a-million-a-year-for-five-years must have made his hunt for cheap rent a little easier. Prior to that he was a Village Voice journalist.

Sadly he has yet to live up to the promise of his exquisite first novel, (a reworking of his Harvard thesis), as his subsequent novels have been distressingly similar.
