To not be able to criticize your own party without being labeled as a traitor or as a closet supporter of the other party is a trait most of the Left attributes to Republicans and the Right, is it not? But it still only worked because Team McCain responded to it so well. Neither of the other campaigns have demonstrated the ability to manage the press as well.

Oh, come on. First of all, McCain wasn't all that angry. He was just goading Bumiller, because she was dragging up some history he'd rather not have dragged up. And there's no downside having his base watch him slap around a NYT reporter. He knows it and used it to his advantage.

But beyond that, the beauty of what he did was to demonstrate that he's not going to be the media's bitch. Just like he did with the aggressive response to the story about the lobbyist. It's been, what, a week, and how many of you can even recall what her name was? If that isn't proof he knows how to drive the message, I don't know what it.

By the way, do you want to see what happens when you lose the upper hand in front of the media?

Why do you & the rest of the Republicans continue with the story that McCain was slimed by the Times?

In fact, the Times gave him a gift!
If the story had come out two months ago, his campaign would have folded up & gone home.
If the story were to come out in six months, McCain, as the GOP candidate would be toast!
By doing the story just after McCain had all but wrapped it up, the Times ensured that it would be forgotten by the general election in November.

@karion: Sorry, but that reporter was so unprofessional with the last angry question. Why on earth should McCain even speak with the New York Times after they published a Ken Starr worthy story to sell some of their papers, with no evidence rather than circumstantial hearsay. The "Grey Lady's" prominence is sinking faster than the Titanic, and they had to resort to a story you would expect to see in the NY Post. If a conservative publication had written a similar story about Clinton, the media would have a fit. I am so sick of partisanship in newspapers, magazines, and cable new channels. How can you present a slanted story, and call it "news." The line between and editorial and objective writing is no longer blurred, it has disappeared.
