After reading 'Never Let Me Go' I now assume everyone from boarding school is a clone who I can treat as I wish because they're going to die soon. Tilda may just be bitter the time to crop her organs has come.

@DorothyMantooth: Okay, good point, and I certainly allow Potter for for beach reading. But when people I know, aged, say 23 or so, start queuing at midnight to be the first to get the latest Potter book... I start to question my social circle.

If one does need kids' books with adult subtexts, may I point one in the direction of Philip Pullman? No, it's no problem at all, you're very welcome.

BTW, ever read any Jilly Cooper? Now that's some adult shiz you can roll your eyes at all holiday loooong!

An ex of mine went to boarding school and he was pretty much emotionally fucked up beyond repair. I don't know if those two things are related, but it probably didn't help.

Also, I admit I don't get the Harry Potter fascination. I made myself read the first book and was just bored. Watched the second movie on a plane. Bored. I guess you either really love it or just don't.

English boarding schools can be pretty horrible places to be, according to my co-worker from England who spent his entire youth in one.

@pufflehuff: I'm glad Balk's not here (and that's the only time I'm gonna say that, btw!) to ban me for what I'm about to admit, but I actually think the Potter books are great! The fact of the matter is, it's writing for kids that has a decidedly "adult" subtext that you can pick up on rather easily if you care to. I'm certainly not calling it Literature, by any stretch, but for "beach reading"? It beats the hell out of Judith Krantz and Danielle Steele! And those are "adult" books. I would far sooner roll my eyes at someone reading I'll Take Manhattan on the subway than someone reading Chamber of Secrets.

It really annoys me when I see grown adults reading Potter. READ GROWN-UP BOOKS!!! C'MON! The plots aren't that gripping and, let's face it, gajillionaire or not, the Rowling is writing for DA KIDZ. It's all a bit too simple. File under "mystifyingly sheep-like behaviour."

The New School at West Heath (often referred to simply as The New School) is an independent school for children for whom mainstream schooling has broken down, for varying reasons. While many are not mentally or physically disabled, many have been through harsh circumstances and suffer from related things such as emotional trauma, which fits with the school's motto, "Rebuilding damaged lives."

There are two kinds of kids at boarding school, though: kids who are there because their parents are rich snobs and kids who are there because they or their parents are "working through some issues." The first kind grow up in awe of kids who went to public schools, the second just grow up bitter and insecure.

Mind you, the Pevensies went to boarding school, too, so she's a hypocrite as well.

That being said? I've yet to meet anyone who's gone to boarding school that I didn't immediately want to throttle. Or medicate.
