@adminslave: I'm sorry, but Jacob is fantastic. I read anything he writes, regardless of the show (I loved his Apprentice recaps best, even though I've never watched a minute of that show). But the strength fo the site as a whole was its ability to maintain a pretty consistent editorial voice while letting a variety of styles and voices coexist in the recaps -- if you hated one recapper, there was usually another you would grow to love.

I could care less about the forums, it was always about the writing and editing for me. Too bad all that seems to be over. Damn.

@tunamelt: True that the bigger forums have become unwieldy and not really worth looking at for worthy snark. I think I got my fanatic status on The Amazing Race, but in the last few years, I'm mostly on the sub-threads within the generically-named Drama, Candid Reality, and Cartoon forums. The Oz forum is still fun, particularly when an Oz alum turns up on another show.

Kentucky Lawmaker Wants to Make Anonymous Internet Posting Illegal

Kentucky Representative Tim Couch filed a bill this week to make anonymous posting online illegal.

The bill would require anyone who contributes to a website to register their real name, address and e-mail address with that site.

Their full name would be used anytime a comment is posted.

If the bill becomes law, the website operator would have to pay if someone was allowed to post anonymously on their site. The fine would be five-hundred dollars for a first offense and one-thousand dollars for each offense after that.

Representative Couch says he filed the bill in hopes of cutting down on online bullying. He says that has especially been a problem in his Eastern Kentucky district.

Action News 36 asked people what they thought about the bill.

Some said they felt it was a violation of First Amendment rights. Others say it is a good tool toward eliminating online harassment.

Represntative Couch says enforcing this bill if it became law would be a challenge.

Last comment on this: the recaps for Deadwood were great. It helped that I didn't have cable at the time and could only occasionally download episodes. Also, if you like classic recaps, the ones for Twin Peaks are solid. Probably the best recap on the site is an extra in the OC section, for the movie 'Center Stage.' If you are bored at work (which is frankly the reason why comment anywhere or even watch half of these terrible shows), check it out.

I've noticed the decline on TWOP. And yes, the rules were strict--often insanely so. On the other hand, discussions did stay on topic quite closely, and didn't often devolve into insults aimed at other posters.

But now the site is too hard to keep up with. I don't even look at the recaps, unless I've missed an episode (the quality of recaps has declined in a particularly noticeable way since they started including sitcoms, which the original TWOP avoided recapping). And the major show forums are just too much. I do spend time in "other shows," because the discussions are more manageable and retain more of the community feel--but in general I have more and more trouble maintaining my interest in TWOP.

There's always been a lengthy list of rules commenters are not to break on TWoP (formerly Mighty Big TV -- nice reference to that, Richard), and the creators are to blame for that.

But, it's true: What makes that site special is the community. And, I think there will always be plenty of commenters there. I like to go there after a show has just finished and get a quick consensus on people's immediate feelings. It can be good media research, obviously worth whatever Bravo paid for it.

I missed this the first time too and was inspired to log into TWoP, again, to discover I haven't done so since 5:07 pm on November 2007.

I'd been a forum poster for 4 years, mostly on music threads and The O.C.

What everyone said about it just getting too big is right. Unless you read the small threads for less popular shows, it just got to be too much. You couldn't keep track of the threads and with the byzantine rules, it just got to be too much hassle to keep up with.

Sad.

I regrettably missed the first post on this, and must note (in line with others )that while I enjoyed TWOP in the past, it is insanely easy to get banned/warned from TWOP. I was banned for getting angry at someone for giving away a MAJOR death on 'The Wire,' in a thread about DVD releases (I wanted to know when season four came out, not to have season three semi-ruined for me). One of their staff writers who writes recaps for many shows I actually enjoy (Dr. Who, Gossip Girl) has started to remind me eerily of Cary Tennis in that he makes no sense and seemingly has no sense of humor, everything is some mystical issue. Ugh.

So the content/portal that generated the network becomes self-sustaining through the relationships created by participants. Okay, I'll bite. That seems valid.

Perhaps a bit limited, though. It's like buying a coin-op carwash and showing up once a week to collect the change and fill the vending machines. You aren't really driving business in or out, you're just turning the key. I'm sure this is not the way it was explained to management when the place was purchased -the long-term value is in building the community. If you're satisfied with current cash flows, why would you pay a premium to acquire them?
