Not only did the Times have a separate, lesser section for the Metro editorials, they 86'd it few weeks ago! Because New Yorkers famously have no interest in anything local...?

The tension between the "national newspaper" strategy of the NY Times and the Metro Section has been obvious for awhile. Their coverage of major NY stories (the Sean Bell trial, for example), has been woeful for a few years now. The creation of a separate editorial page for the metro desk was kind of insulting, like "go play at the kid's table and don't bother us." And, of course, the absurd, powder-puff style pieces that have been proliferating like intestinal fauna throughout various sections, including the front page and the metro section, have lowered journalistic standards to dangerous levels (see, e.g., House and Home's "reporting" on Peggy Seltzer's Oregon bungalow).

The Metro Section generally and the City Section/City Room in particular are consistently excellent. It's ironic that struggling papers in other places, that can't depend on the quantity of national coverage (deserved or not), also can't seem to match the Times quality in local coverage.

Given the amount of people in the Tri-State Area, the Metro Section (or at least metro reporting) can be a cash cow. They just have to break more stories and be more topical. I swear I have seen stuff that was in the Daily News the day before in the Times.
