I grew up with Ashley. She is definitely 22 and at least from the time she was in elementary school she lived in a very large house in Wall Township. She dissapeared supposedly running off with a much older guy. Previous to this she was wearing an engagement ring, after about a week she said it was just a joke to get people's reactions, but she dissapeared not long after that. The last anyone heard she had been in Florida on girls gone wild. As far as I've seen all former classmates who commented actually did go to high school with us and know her.

"Public identification records" are wrong all the time because the info is often supplied by the person in question. If, for instance, she ever lied about her age when applying for a credit card, that info could easily end up in such a record.

@FitnessMadeSimple: yeah, I see what you're saying. The hardest part of it is that it's really hard for me to believe the Times wasn't absolutely right. I know with Jayson Blair that shouldn't be a problem, but it is, at least for me.

And then --because it was the Times that started all this -- part of me is wondering whether they pushed out a shoddily-reported story and fell for the girl's spin just because they wanted to be first, rather than accurate.

I agree that she is probably older than 22, but probably more like 28. I think her Myspace is a little overdramatized--I mean her claim of having been "homeless" might just mean she slept on somebody's couch for a few weeks while she looked for an apartment. And "i've been on drugs" makes her sound like a smack addled street urchin when in reality, I mean, I've "been on drugs" too, in fact, I just took some Xanax. And I smoked pot like five times in college. So I've "been on drugs."

If she moved around a lot, my guess is she may have been left back in school here and there which is why her sophmore year might be three years later than her freshman year.

I've pretty much just read about 15 stories about this, and half the "reported" information conflicts with itself, and most of it comes from Carolyn Capalbo or Ashley Whatever. There are two former classmates who say that Ashley was rich, and a few articles that said she lived in a "McMansion" in Jackson with her grandfather. It all contradicts itself, and something must be bullshit. Either these reporters are the sloppiest people in history or the family is lying.

There is an Ashley Youmans in Belmar who is 32-33 years old depending on which database you check. However, the mother of this Ashley, the woman who has been quoted the last few days, one Carolyn Unknown Birth Name Youmans Dupre Capalbo, has a lot of records attesting to the fact that she is only 46 herself making it very unlikely her daughter is 32.

I have no opinion about her age -- I think she's older, but not by 10 years -- but her entire story doesn't add up, maybe?

Her brother said they grew up in a blue-collar Shore town (Beachwood) so how did she end up in grade school at Wall, which is really far away? She moved closer to Wall in high school, but that was 2000, way after the fifth grade.

Also, apparently between 2000 and 2003 she lived in a McMansion and one of her friends in high school describes her as a wealthy kid (which is not so much in her self-reported bio of having nothing).

Also, if she was a freshman in 2000, and she left in her sophomore year, and she (according to her mother and her brother and the Times) left in 2003 for North Carolina -- how is 2003 her "sophomore year" if 2000 was her "freshman" year?

Everything's off by just a year or two. It is strange.

I know people lie about their age. But the whole going-back-to-high-school thing is taking a bit far. It could also explains why, as in the Post story, "she didn't date the guys in high school. She always liked older guys."

The New York Times article gives her age as 22. Although I guess you could say that if they're concerning themselves with this sort of thing, maybe they're letting certain reporting details slip by the wayside.

On the other hand, they also give her mother's age as 46. If that's correct, then it seems a lot more likely that Ashley is younger than 32.
