The Internet does consist of communities, and each has its own culture and its own rules, created by the people who take part in it. My column, which some of you might want to actually read before you denounce (it's at [www.miamiherald.com]), isn't about the whole Internet, it's about the sites that legacy news organizations are creating as they migrate online. I think the online communities that coalesce around those sites shouldn't be shy about developing rules that favor civil and respectful discourse. The result won't be as colorful and as much fun as the back-and-forth on Gawker and elsewhere. But my point is that sites run by journalism organizations have a unique purpose, that's to be places for a particular kind of civic conversation. That conversation thrives when people abide by some basic rules, which news organizations, timid about driving off possible participants, seem reluctant to adopt.

1) The comments are -- no offense -- often funnier than the posts. Nothing against the posts! But more minds increase the chance of funniness.

2) You blog editor people aren't the only ones to give out commies. (Not that you bitchez have given me one, but whatever). Everyone I know reads Gawker and I don't want to be left out. Also, I want one of them to say something unwittingly like, "The best thing anyone said about that was this commenter cassandra, on gawker." What? It could happen!

3) Cheaper than drugs, but still dulls the pain. Most of my day will be filled with tasks of varying importance, and some will take a long time. A comment is like a little accomplishment, something I can get now.

4) Commenting and reading the comments prevents me from forwarding Gawker items all day long to co-workers and starting long threads of email that will eventually get me subpoenaed and fired.

5)I think I'm really smart and I like to try to prove that occasionaly.

6) The editors are really mean. Why can't we be?
