I went to many, many TV tapings for an old job, and when the audience is miked it's essential that they stay quiet, or it would be a nighmare for the sound guys mixing the show. So applause signs can be used to indicate that it's OK for the audience to be noisy at that time.

Also, I normally love Tina Fey, but going after Stewart is crossing the line is my book. He has many, many more hours of hilarious television under his belt than she does. I absolutely adore "30 Rock," I never miss an episode. But it's only been on for a season and a half and most of her years on SNL were pretty fruitless. Also, "Mean Girls" sucked.
