@donmiguel: I know the science on this one. AIDS meds cure people ... I'm sorry, I meant delay the progression of the disease ... and that's that. Anything that gives prospective patients the idea that docs are conspiring against them by wanting to treat them is just wrong. Now if you want to discuss criminal neglect, think of pricing of meds and availability of same in the Third World. But the science is good and the drugs are good.

@Mike_Jahn: Well Mike, Randy Shilts didn't think that AIDS neglect was a "rumor" or a fake conspiracy. You can read about the Tuskegee Experiment on NPR.com (among other places) for another case of neglect. And in the US a respected government advisor felt comfortable suggesting something for which he'd have been arrested in a more civilized country (Lichtenstein, Sweden, Finland -- for example). Of course, I realize that there really IS no such thing as a conspiracy. I'd rather not have a "heart attack" later on tonight.

Got it. The rumor that AIDS was a conspiracy to kill people did wonders for health care in the inner city. Here's how it went/goes. Doctor tells man he's sick even though he doesn't look it. Doctor gives man shot. Man then begins looking sick. Ergo, the doctor poisoned him. And THAT was a problem pre-Internet. It made it hard for AIDS docs to use AZT.
