@luciluce666: That's somewhat true except that often they get liquor and food sponsors that donate their goods and services in exchange for a tax write-off and some publicity for them as well. It does vary but in general, the charity is not paying the same amount that a regular person would have to in order to have a lavish party like that, so they are able to raise a significant amount - especially when it comes to the people who buy tables that cost $10,000+ (for a cheap one).

So in essence, all of us freeloading journalists who sneak in to the ball when the red carpet police are distracted by a nipple slip are exactly like Mary Kate Olsen. Except if we want our chicken dinner, we have to wait until everyone's seated and scope out who didn't show up. Seems more reasonable than paying $350 for donated Absolut.

These galas are clearly not about charity. If they were the chairs wouldn't waste such a hefty percentage the money on all the flash, they would QUIETLY just donate it to the actual charity.

These dog and pony shows are about ego, publicity, glamor, scene. Period. It's a way to justify another prom for the socialclimbers and famewhores. Most of these bitches spend more on their dresses than what they actually donate for the event.

Acts of charity should need no credit. Isn't the whole concept simply about being selfless?

When I was AEC at an uptown museum I remember Claire Bernard, Fabiola Beracasa and Euan Rellie paying for tixs to a winter dance. Had to call Ivanka Trump's office because her Amex card was declined...twice.

And that was before the RE meltdown.
