@intothelight: I can't really speak to him as better than Dodd or Biden or Dennis, 'cause I don't know enough about them, but his record is comparable to Clinton's -- neither of them has an overwhelming legislative record -- and I think his campaign has demonstrated that he's organized, he's more in tune with the culture, and, most important, he's really good at acknowledging that there aren't black-and-white answers to the questions we're facing. Not only does he openly acknowledge that he can't provide perfect solutions, but he seems to think we're grown up enough to handle that. I mean, he gets called out for the hope thing, but he's been very consistent about it not being a fluffy hope -- he just says the prizes are there, as long as we're willing to work for them.

And moreover, I don't get why people act like Clinton does have substance. I mean, of the two things she's campaigned on, her experience has been shown to be mostly fabricated, and her readiness is seriously called into question by the fact that she wasn't even ready for a serious primary race.

I don't think Obama's gotten a free pass. That Wright shit was nuts. He had to go out and defend himself over something someone else said -- a few carefully gleaned soundbites that made up a fraction of the minister's body of work, and that made more sense in the context of the entire sermons they were taken from than by themselves. And he did it about as well as could be expected. As for gender, I'm sure it unconsciously influences us as much as race does or more, but I'm also sure that the stuff I don't like about Clinton has nothing to do with her chromosomes.

Yes, it has been unfair to her. But - and I say this as a Hillary supporter whose allegiance is flagging - she's brought a lot of it on herself. Too much knife-in-the-ribs style of campaigning. What really made me start to feel differently was during the whole "Obama is a Muslim" flap, and she said, "oh, no, he's not a Muslim; AT LEAST NOT THAT I KNOW OF." Too much of that type thing, and it grates on people. Including me, increasingly.

Well, her campaign has left her pretty open for ridicule, sure. Whether it's for fodder for her victim schtick, I don't know.

But if you look at Obama's actual political experience, there's a lot that speaks to an extraordinarily savvy, charismatic and ambitious politician -- he plays the game with gusto -- but not a lot by way of tangible results to warrant his over-eager deification he's enjoyed. The country is in such a shit state at the moment that it's awfully easy to capitalize on a vague platitude like "Hope".

I'm not saying he's the wrong guy for the job. I think he certainly appears to be a cut above the rest intellectually, and presents himself tremendously (not to mention that his favorite TV show is "The Wire", which instantly makes him cool with me.) But I'm just irked by the fact that politics, for everything we should have learned during the course of this current administration, is as big a face-value game as it ever was -- show business for ugly people, so to speak. There's something inherently discouraging to me in these instances where the hearts of the masses are so easily swayed...but then again, I might just be a cynical bastard.
