@weakdome: Maybe not. If you wanted that sentence to be truly parallel, wouldn't you have to say, "Our scientific advisory board, nearly 400 strong, serves as A volunteer"? The board itself is singular, but it's understood that the board is composed of plural members, so I think he's OK to use the plural conjugation of "serve," and in fact that may be a better choice than using the singular "serves" with the plural "volunteers." I can't forgive him for that "owe's," though.

his gripe with when reporters ask about funding isn't a complaint against questioning about industry funding - it's a complaint about questioning about industry funding ONLY. (Read the sentence more closely.) That is NOT "good reporting."

"Good reporting" would be if all donations and funding were examined as closely as an industry's funding is.

@TheHonJudgeSmails: I agree...partially. Is it notable who funds somebody that releases a statement that benefits specific industries? Absolutly. Why? Because I bet Weyerhouser isn't on that list. Publishing information, even editorials, that benefit somebody who helps you eat and potentially harms somebody that doesn't is very notable. That is why journalists use that little "(Full Disclosure: ...)" bit whenever they have an issue such as this.

Now then, does the source of funding negate the validity of the results? No, but this wasn't published results of an experiment, it was an opinionated editorial.
