The level of uproar all depends on the kind of gay.

There was a piece in the Village Voice a few years ago about black men on the downlow; I remember one quote from a closeted gangbanger: "you can walk through the projects and be gay, but you cannot walk through the projects and be a faggot."

Given how many young black men are cycled through the incarceration process, there's probably a fair amount of don't ask/don't tell about situational homosexuality, as long as you're playing the "male" role. There's a whole lot of rap lyrics out there about making some rival your sexual victim.

I wouldn't be surprised if the only uproar would be over a flamboyant gay rapper, or a tough guy who turned out to be a wide receiver, if you get my drift.
