After 17 months on the job, I finally asked for ONE vacation day to schedule an exciting three-day birthday weekend. I was then asked if I could work on the Saturday before my Monday off.

not taking a vacation is like that anti-coke commercial from the 80s. gotta work more hours so i can make more money so i can buy more coke so i can work more hours so i can make more money so i can buy more coke so i can work more hours...

only without the coke part and in that phrase's proxy are the words "pay these bills". people aren't taking vacations because it costs 80 bucks to fill their tanks up with gas. i'd love to take a vacation. my employer wouldn't mind. but i would. i simply can't afford it.
