]]> <![CDATA[Remembering Bob Marley's Mom]]> Stuff the snark and snot, kids. Jamaica is a wonderous nation, and that has nothing to do with the tourist image that it has had to propagate to survive. I was lucky enough to have been able to go there 10 years ago, for two weeks, when I stayed with some friends who worked there in the foreign service for Spain, which was not at all glamourous. (In terms of salary and services, kind of like working for the DMV in Queens.) Real low budget.We stayed in the cheapest hostales, traveled back roads and stayed away from the reggae tourist traps. I grew up in NYC and studied and worked with and taught Jamaican immigrants and always loved the culture and people, and loved it more when I got to know it all in the country. As a local there described it, the Ireland of the Caribbean: music and literature and life that survived colonial oppression, just barely. There's a lot more to Marley than we know from his music, and his people deserve respect and interest.

He had wanted to date her, but she was dating my friend's Dad at the time, and Marley was, according to my friend's Mom, "a bad man who smoked the pot." But then she [the mom] was notorious for stealing my friend's wine and drinking it all, so who knows, maybe I should check out the video and see if I recognize anyone familiar.
