I love, love, love that when James Frey writes a "novel" it ends up as, um, non fiction; just like when he writes "memoirs" that are pure fiction. Is this why people think that he's so zeitgeisty? Because he defies convention so blatantly? Clever one, that James Frey!

@Richard: I would go so far to say that Frey's grammar is nonexistant more so than just terrible. (I've also always thought that A Million Little Pieces could easily be reduced to a pamphlet by a decent editor. Or a below average editor. Or just by removing all of the "arty" spacing.)

@GollyG: However, Frey's prior work indicates that this is likely the final draft.

Choice of typeface, rag-right margins, and no paragraph indents suggest this is a manuscript version, not a page from the proofs. So there is a chance that there will be at least a copyeditor between that version and the bound book.

@MsMerlin: Stream of consciousness is harder to do than you may imagine. And no amount of editing will fix that. It would have to be completely rewritten, and THEN you'd just wind up with a well-written term paper or, maybe, Wikipedia entry (often the same thing). I find it hard to believe that someone gets paid to write that. It's not even reporters notes that someone accidently set in type.
