Sometimes, I'll be in that glorious "still drunk and thus convinced that this happy fog has become my natural state and I can't wait to write a book about how getting drunk fixed my life" condition, and I'll be taking that train because the city ate all my money and I have to go beg for more, and I'm reasonably sure I'll get it so I'm pretty psyched for what's coming, and it is in the reveries inspired by such things that I see those palisades rushing by on the opposing shore and I think of all the awesome city people with whom I've fallen in love, riding around in tunnels and doing things snappily and getting ticked off at inefficiency and I wonder what such a sight would do to them. Would they even be able to see it, or would it just be rocks to them?

Then, about ten minutes from disembarkation, I get violently ill in the train bathroom and lay the foundation for a full weekend of Classic Zorica Breakdown fun and games. The Upper Hudson Valley proves to be the perfect place to feel both safe and irrelevant. Such an important river, such an important history, such unimportant, petty people living in their little soap bubble, fighting with the zoning board and blocking each others' views of the water. In the spring it reminds me of Brigadoon. In the winter it reminds me of my plan to go on a murderous rampage.
