The video you posted is pretty horrendous, but Carlos does some decent standup. Also, I saw 30 Rock after seeing some of his stuff, and Toofer does seem suspiciously like the character he portrays onstage. However, it's not like "preppy black guy" is a copyrighted, unique, or particularly enlightening stereotype.

i think the strike really sealed the deal for stewart. colbert, however is as shiny as that dime he was chucking to Rain last night.

See this is what I'm talking about. I think? I dunno. But I do think this kind of humor feels very Daily Showish/Colbert reportish in its smart, insightful, well-written, liberal, studio audience laughing whoop factor non-confrontational confrontational-ness. I mean, I think it's funny, like the idea of it, but I also don't care. Because it seems like something anyone could of done but thank goodness someone did it because Lord knows it needed to be done to fill a certain gap somewhere. I can't explain it beyond that, whereas Aaron McGruder (he just happens to be the only person I can think of at the moment he exemplifies this, I'm not directly comparing him to this guy) writes stuff so intense that makes me go DAMN!!!! But I think I'm now talking about something else and I think I just respond more passionately to humor that's more ferocious. Whatever, who cares.

I saw a Winstead interview the other day in which she said that the Daily Show has to stay true to what it's trying to lampoon, which is the starchy-white evening news. So unless Brian Williams starts using the Fly Girls to lead in to the Prilosec commercials, it may be a while before the show gets much, um, color-er

Aaron McGruder's brand of comedy does not rely on the same "look at me, I'm so square! But hipster clever, right?!" self-deprecating energy to get laughs. But the comedy-style of many black comedy writers, Wannabe Twofer included, does. Do you think he would be a less apt fit than Bill Engvall? Do you think Bill Engvall would use 'Cassiopeia' as a(n ineffectual) punchline?

@ambitious: I don't think all black writers like whatever "THISSSS" is but I do think that there is a certain brand of whiteness that writes both The Daily Show and The Colbert Report, and if you can't imitate it, you're not going to be writing for that show, which I guess is also true for many non-white writers, but my larger point is that for example, I don't think, were he so inclined, someone like Aaron McGruder could bring his brand of funny to that writing staff. It would be like, waaaaaay too awkward. Interesting for sure, but super awkward.

Now you know it what it felt like for Chris Rock, Tracy Morgan, Daemon Wayans, and a whole lot of other black comedians did when they "broke" into the scene. Sorry to hear it, really. Best of luck to you though, as you're original and pretty damn funny too, which is hard to come about apparently these days (ie Seth McFarlane, but he's white...so he gets a free pass).

I've thought about this. And I'm black and maybe it's stupid to say but it seems to me from watching both The Daily Show and The Colbert Report, that the writing on both has a particular brand of whiteness to it that doesn't seem like can really be deviated from. I imagine as a black writer, you could master the style and write really funny stuff, but I bet it wouldn't be as satisfying from one's own specific cultural point of view as having one's own platform from which to be funny. Unless, of course, you enjoyed exploring things from those particular brands of whiteness.
