As I recall, he was one of the dubious Republican votes on the Civil Rights Act of 1964, but his wife supported the legislation, and would call ahead to Nebraska every time he headed there from DC, so that he would be met at the airport by people who urged him to vote in favor of the law.

"Bucolic" is how I would describe it. When the sun set over Fresh Kills, the sky was kinda awesome. You could see the stars at night, and hear the crickets too. The traffic getting into Brookyn and Manhattan was a bitch, but it was, like, funny, seeing the same characters over and over again, and hearing them telling each other stories about shopping, hair, fat husbands... it was priceless.

Staten Island was like the State that never was, New Jersey's appendix, Rhode Island's evil twin. In a sense, Staten Island is the embodiment of a polite "fuck you", if that's even possible. And I miss it.
