Now, if Bill Maher criticized the Jewish people in the same manner he did with the Pope, the ADL would rip him to shreds.(with the possibility that violence actually might be involved) He isn't even mentioned in their website other than in a quote.

Nor do I like "under God" in the pledge of allegiance. That was inserted by an act of congress with the explicit porpose of indoctrinating into children the notion that this a country for religious people, not atheists. That's basically what the congressman who sponsored the legislation came right out and said.

I don't get all furious or bent out of shape about either of these things, but I don't think they're OK. Both are examples of an institutional alienation and marginalizion a class of U.S. citizens. I think that's wrong.

To me core of atheism is believing what I choose wiithout concerning myself with what others do. If I was forced to pray or something of this magnitude I would of course feel violated but using a piece of paper with a nondenomonational phrase on it to buy a pack of gum, not so much.

Atheists don't push their views on other people. We don't make schoolchildren stand up every morning and recite a pledge that includes an affirmation of the nonexistence of God. We don't get atheist statements printed on U.S. currency and then throw a hissy fit if someone proposes removing them. We don't go door to door and ask total strangers, "Have you heard the word of God's nonexistence today?"

Mostly, we just mind our own business and try not to offend you religious types.

But I guess in this world, simply expressing the opinion that God doesn't exist constitutes "pushing our views on other people." Because the very notion of atheism is so ... pushy, it seems.

I also think it is fallacy to compare notes on "which religion or oppressed minority is suffering the most." Anti-semitism sucks and exists, and we don't have to compare it to a lack of anti-Catholicism or anti-Mormonism or Anti-Muslim actions to validate it.

Can't we just try to not oppress or otherwise harm any group of people based on their group affiliation? That should about equal it out.

I agree that the ultra conservative movement tends to give Islam very little leeway. However, the left and liberalism does the same with Judaism. If it was a mosque being allegedly discriminated against liberal activists would be the first to object.

Pehaps it is due to this group's view of Israel's treatment of Palestinian refugees. Being unable or unwilling to separate American Jews from the soverign nation of Israel is ignorant in itslef.

At the risk of sounding insensitive, isn't the whole Christian premise of reconciliation and absolution based on finding one of God's little loopholes?

What's more, Many major cities across the United States--such as Washington, D.C., New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Baltimore, Atlanta, and Cincinnati--have one or more eruvs. Both the White House and the United States Supreme Court are within the boundaries of an eruv.

The Jewish law defining how an eruv is made is just the right amount of vague so that if one group's in charge of making the eruv, another group inevitably comes up with reasons why it isn't kosher.

To non-Jews and non-Orthodox Jews this may sound insignificant. But the way this plays out is that those Jews who don't hold by the eruv generally feign mistrust of the dietary kashrus, or kosherness, of those who do.

This feigned mistrust is a convenient weapon for most of the year, but it becomes particularly nasty during Pesach when the anti-eruv folks make a big deal out of categorically refusing to eat anything whatsoever that comes out of pro-eruv household's kitchen.
