@CodePink: EXACTLY. But I'm a lot more taken with all the over-the-topness now than I was during the too-cool '90s. Kind of like how there are some massive buildings in New York that I know were built by the titans of industry as monuments to their own greatness with no regard for the working folk who gave their labor and sometimes even their lives for the construction, and even though I know that's bad, I'm still impressed by their audacity. Kind of like that.

@CodePink: I think it's like, back when she was younger, there was a boy in her life who wasn't much older than the boys who are about to start at the school, and now it's over and ended badly, and she can't help but be overcome with sadness and nostalgia and yet it's so achingly beautiful, too, because it happened, and she wouldn't give it up for the world. And she catches something about the boy at the end that reminds her so strongly and suddenly of her lost love that it makes her heart stop for a second.

I think it's part of the same misunderstanding that makes people think I'm a Bukowski fan. Though I like Bukowski much more than Cash or Waits. Just because an artist drinks and is a mess doesn't mean I care. My two favorite writers never drank at all.
