well, friend, whether that was their point or not is unclear. but I'll amend/counter yours in one crucial respect: depending on one's mood/inclination, and the happenstance/critical mass of the given crowd therein, one can have the most blissful, exhilarating, possibly even enlightening evening at both Lit (owners are good friends of mine, in fact) and the aforementioned. the experience can also be remarkably banal, souldeadening, stultifying. going out on a limb, taking a risk: here lies the beauty, and the art, of embracing the night here. the late 90s/early 00s was, as I previously implied, a rather dormant period for this activity, in my opinion. but there seems to be a bit of a rejuvenation afoot the last couple years.

@worth79: true, Chaos and Wax were definitely early incarnations of this sort, the beginning of the end, you could say.

and, yeah, but Lot was a different sort of place, more of a restaurant, albeit flimsily. but it did indeed put Amy on the map. by the way, she's really nice, people. don't judge a public figure by her cover.

Bungalow 8 arrived nearly a decade into what you refer to as the "models and bottles" era of city nightlife, only now, one hopes, beginning to ebb, alongside the absurdly speculative economy. in fact, for all its annoyances, upon its entree following this rather callow, fallow period, Bungalow reinfused the scene with a certain frisson of intimacy, cachet, even flamboyance, now passing the torch to spots like Beatrice and Rose Bar. yes, these places may leave something to be desired in some ways, but if you're looking for a little pulchritude and some chic ambiance, they stand proudly amidst a grand, time honored NYC tradition, often emulated in other cities, rarely matched.

The flip side to models + bottles is a certain democratization of nightlife (each dollar is the same); not everyone would agree that democratization is a GOOD thing in the nightlife world.
